F is for Found (and Friends) #AtoZchallenge
Odd things are often used for bookmarks and librarians often document their discoveries. I have found recipes, pressed flowers, photos, and shopping lists. My author friend, Angelica Carpenter (librarian emeritus Arne Nixon Library) told me the two oddest things she found was a piece of bacon and a bag of cocaine tied with a ribbon!
There are websites devoted to these finds and today I’ll share a few. They all seem to have a story to tell.

Hello, fellow A-to-Zer! Also? Huzzah! This is one of my favorite topics, ever. I am a bit of a bibliophile, and can’t resist a (moderately-priced) old book. I had always wanted to find something remarkable in one of them, but never really expected to– but then I bought a book called Decorum (1883) at a flea market– and the thing turned out to be stuffed with little oddities. There was a four-leaf clover, a paper doll, several slips of paper bearing signatures and/or Bible verses, a poem about Christmas, and several clippings from newspapers. I felt like I’d stumbled upon a treasure-chest, and it has made me happy ever since, whenever I think about it.

Hi Melanie, This is the best story about found objects ever! You need to submit it to Found Magazine. Have you ever thought o placing a note in a book for others to find? I’m setting up a Little Free Library (my L post) and perhaps I’ll put notes in for people to find.

Sometimes, I use odd things as bookmarks, so I always fan the pages before returning a library book. I haven’t left a note for the next reader, though.
I also love it when I find notes or even coffee stains on books I borrow at the library or even better when I buy second hand books. I imagine the people who read the book before me.

This post is great! I specially love the notes for further readers (well, and who wouldn’t like to find money? Ha ha!). I’ve just found bookmarks, but someone found a postcard I had forgotten inside a book, and put it on the library board, so I re-found it.
