There is a gem of a bookstore in Fresno, CA. It is Petunia’s Place, an independent bookstore specializing in children’s books. The store is bright, cheery and welcoming. It is always decorated with books celebrating each season. Owned by Jean Fennacy (former Fresno Pacific University reading program director) and Debbie Manning (former elementary school teacher), both experts in the field of children’s literature. They have stocked the store with a great variety of books including new books as well as classics. They are able to recommend books that are perfect for gifts, the classroom, and to young readers looking for the “just right” book.
The store often has children’s author events. The monthly book club, “Good Books Good Times” is held on the first Thursday of each month. They also help to facilitate World Book Night in the Fresno area.
If you are in the area, this is a must not miss destination for anyone who loves children’s books. They are located in the Opus 1 Shopping Center 602 N.Palm Avenue in Fresno. (559) 438-1561 www.petuniasbooks.com
Petunia’s Place was named after the the goose in Roger Duvoisin’s picture book, Petunia. Petunia was a silly goose who thought she would become wiser if she carried a book around. Throughout a series of mishaps, Petunia finally comes to a very wise realization, “It is not enough to carry wisdom under my wing. I must put it in my mind and heart.” We should all be so wise.
Petunia picture book written and illustrated by Roger Duvoisin published by Albert A. Knopf 1950
