Sleepy Alphabets for Bedtime

April 22, 2019 By Claire Annette Noland 2 Comments

Everyone with little children who resist bedtime will love

The Sleepy Little Alphabet: A Bedtime Story from Alphabet Town
by Judy Sierra (author) and Melissa Sweet (illustrator)
Knopf 2009
40-page picture book or 34 page board book for preschool – kindergarten

It’s sleepytime in Alphabet Town
As moms and dads run round and round
The little letters skitter-scatter
Helter skelter what’s the matter?

The problem is that the twenty-six little lower case letters are not ready for bed. They are full of mischief and have plenty of excuses for their upper case parents who are trying to tuck them in. Each little’s personality is on display beginning with “a who is wide awake” and “b who still has a bath to take.“ The letters are illustrated in watercolor, pencil, and collage and pair perfectly with the sweet and silly rhyming text.

Finally,

“Who’s that snoring Zzzz?
See you in the morning abc’s!”

The Sleepy Alphabet is a fun bedtime book but children will probably want you to read it again instead of going to sleep.

I’m sure you are familiar with the classic Good Night, Moon by Margaret Wise Brown which has put generations of children (and their parents) to sleep, but did you know that she wrote a number of other bedtime books? One of them is

Sleepy ABC
by Margaret Wise Brown (author) and Esphyr Slobodkina (illustrator)
Lothrop, Lee, and Shepherd, 1953
32 page picture book
This sweet alphabet book features gentle rhyme and soft delightfully vintage patchwork illustrations guaranteed to lull little ones to sleep.

Interestingly, Sleepy ABC was reprinted in 2009 as a board book with new illustrations by Karen Katz.
Margaret Wise Brown’s poetic, lyrical text is accompanied by bright, cheerful illustrations of cute toddlers. A diverse group of children are featured in the book the illustrations just don’t seem sleepy to me.
Do you have any favorite bedtime stories?

I like the original Sleepy ABC by Margaret Wise Brown. The illustrations are beautiful and the words do lull me to sleep.

I love the original. Margaret Wise Brown wrote many bedtime books. I guess they were her specialty!
