The Voice of Liberty – a story that needs to be told

November 4, 2020 By Claire Annette Noland 2 Comments

As people surge to the polls this week, let’s not forget women’s hard-won fight for the right to vote. Today I am sharing a picture book that shines a light on three relatively unknown suffragists whose story needs to be better known.

THE VOICE OF LIBERTY
By Angelica Shirley Carpenter (author) and Edwin Fotheringham (illustrator)
South Dakota Historical Society Press 2020
32-page non-fiction picture book for ages 6-10
Themes: women’s history, suffragists, the Statue of Liberty
Setting: New York Harbor, 1886

The story begins-
“Katie! Matilda!” Lillie said as she rattled her newspaper. “Look at this! It’s
outrageous.”
The page she held across the breakfast table was full of stories about the Statue of Liberty.
“A gift to our country from France,” her daughter Katie said, skimming the text.
“Marching bands. A grand naval parade.
President Cleveland to speak at the dedication.”

Matilda Joslyn Gage, Lillie Devereux Blake, and Katherine “Katie” Devereux Blake were outraged that Liberty was portrayed as a woman when females had few freedoms. These brave activists believed that women should have the right to vote and to participate in government. Unfortunately, women weren’t even permitted to attend the dedication of the statue.
Gage and the mother-daughter Devereux Blake duo were determined to attend the ceremony but first, they needed to find a boat.

This lively and entertaining book reveals the incredible true story of how these women rallied others in the New York State Woman Suffrage Association to raise money and rent a boat so that they could be present to protests at the dedication. Unfortunately, the only boat available happened to be a cattle barge which the owner promised to scour. The women arrived in the rain to find an incredibly smelly vessel. Two hundred of them held their noses, boarded the John Lennox, and sailed down the Hudson River. Their cries of “Votes for Women” were met by chants of “Home-wreckers.”

They did not win the right to vote that day but they did make the newspapers and made “another step forward.”

Why you need to add THE VOICE OF LIBERTY to your bookshelves:

  • In this centennial year anniversary of women being granted the right to vote, we are introduced to a little-known event in American history showing the very real people involved in the fight for women’s rights.
  • Edwin Fotheringham’s colorful and detailed illustrations depict this historical time with humor and accuracy. The facial expressions add to the engaging text.
  • The witty dialogue comes from actual writings, articles, and accounts of the day.
  • The back-matter includes information on Matilda Joslyn Gage, Lillie Devereux Blake, and Katherine “Katie” Devereux Blake and their fight for women’s rights, history about the Statue of Liberty, an equal rights timeline, and a bibliography with source notes for the dialogue.
  • This well-researched book will be appreciated by both children and adults. Highly recommended.

I have never heard this remarkable story about the women who rented a cattle boat to attend the dedication of the Statue of Liberty — I didn’t even know women weren’t permitted to attend. So glad you found this gem and share it today!

Today's journal prompt was Where were you a year ago?
Thanks to my phone camera, I could easily take a look. And there were the faces of Christina, Thomas and Evelyn on January 18, 2020 as I was leaving Nicaragua. Little did I know that there would be a pandemic and the flights were stopped. Somehow, things fell into place and I was able to return with Roxanne on January 18, 2021. It has been amazing watching to process of MIMIC M It has been amazing watching to process of MIMIC MAKERS go from idea to picture book! I can’t wait to hold it in my hands. Posted @withregram • @knordynordy COVER REVEAL

After raising two boys and teaching for over twenty years in a public school, I’ve witnessed the natural wonder that children have about the living world. Their voracious curiosity to understand the mysteries of our planet is in everything they do! Does it float? Does it fly? Does bend or break? Children are curiosity in motion! I’ve come to believe this wonder about the world is the first step on the pathway to living sustainably on our beautiful planet. How ? By being curious and learning from the living world.

Well...innate curiosity is something I wanted to explore. So...
I asked each inventor in my book what sparked their curiosity about nature? Well...after years of research, lots of interviews, and loads of classroom projects, MIMIC MAKERS was born. This picture book is a look at ten inventors from around the world, who began asking questions and investigating nature to create amazing biomimicry inventions that help us all. I hope it inspires a new generation of mimic makers.

My thanks to my incredible editor, Alyssa Mito Pusey and the entire staff at Charlesbridge. Huge thanks to Paul Boston for your superb illustrations. Many thanks to Gretchen Hooker and Sherry Ritter of the Biomimicry Institute.
