Welcome to today’s edition of the A to Z Blog Challenge featuring Library Love. I must admit, I had a hard time coming up with a library something featuring the letter X.
Then, I remembered that “X marks the spot” for Indiana Jones in the Library of Alexandria. (Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade)
Do you remember card catalogs? I certainly do. I set out to find one so that I could look in the X drawer. I called numerous libraries and historical museums to no avail. There must be one somewhere and when I find it, I’ll let you know.
But, I did some digging and found an entry with a Library of Congress catalog number. This isn’t a book I’d enjoy reading but at least it starts with the letter X.
I did some more searching in the Library of Congress holdings and found this music for the Xylophone Polka:
So that’s it for X but it does prove that you can always find something at the library.
Do you know where I might be able to find a card catalog still containing the cards?
I can’t believe they don’t keep the cards somewhere. There is still something neat about flicking through the cards with fingertips. I like the X in the library in the movie cause its great to see a library in a movie.

I remember card catalogs! Somehow, I miss them…even though we have computers to make things easier. I have a book that starts with X!!

Hi Claire – I went to Bletchley Park – the British Codebreaking site in WW2 – and I’m sure there’s plenty of Xs in there … maybe even a hut … but I did see card catalogues … well done for X though … but also for remembering the X marks the spot in the Indiana Jones movie … cheers Hilary

Hi Hilary. That sounds like a field trip I’d like to take and good to know that there’s still a card catalog around.
the library has everything when you think about it. I’ve only used those card catalog once years ago, don’t think I’ve seen them since.

I do recall those card catalogs. And kids today complain about Google… pu-lease! LOL.
