Y is for yummy in today’s a to z blog post for the April challenge.
The Yummy Alphabet Book: Herbs, Spices, and Other Natural Flavors
by Jerry Pallotta (author) and Leslie Evans (illustrator)
Charlesbridge 1994
32-page nonfiction alphabet book
First of all, I think Jerry Pallotta wins the prize for writing the most alphabet books. I can’t figure out what subject he hasn’t turned into an alphabet book. This one focuses on things that add flavors to food. I’m just not sure who the audience is – kids who are learning the alphabet or parents interested in food? The choices and facts are interesting and, as in all of this series, the illustrations are gorgeous. Actually, I think the illustrations are what makes this book stand out. So, if you want to know a bit more about lavender, maple syrup, and nutmeg this is a book for you.
Some of the items, such as Zater, will be unfamiliar to many people.
What’s your favorite “go to” herb or spice?

Hi Claire – looks like a delightful book – I’d love to see it … Yummy – = yes! Cheers Hilary

I think it has more appeal to adults than kids which seems to be the case for a number of alphabet books I’ve found.

Hmm…I’m not sure I have a favorite go-to spice. We enjoy cooking different cuisines and have fun trying different “exotic” spices. Lately, I’ve been intrigued by fenugreek.
Claire Annette Noland says
What is fenugreek? It sounds like something odd to me.
Trine Grillo says
Definitely garlic. But I have recently jumped on the Turmeric bandwagon.
Claire Annette Noland says
I’ll go for the garlic, too. I keep hearing about the health benefits of turmeric. I guess I need to give it a try.

This one looks interesting, but I see your point that it might be more appealing to me than to young kids. Still, I’ll have to look for it.
I like lots of different spices. I think ginger is particularly cool because it is the only spice I can think of that can be used well in every course of every meal, savory and sweet, breakfast lunch and dinner, drinks and desserts…
