This is a great weekend. Not only do we get to celebrate Valentine’s Day but it is time to get out and join the Great Backyard Bird Count.
The GBBC is an annual event begun in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society. It is a four day event held in February with the goal of creating a picture of the number and locations of bird populations. It was the first online citizen science project and has grown over the years to include thousands of participants of all ages. For information on the bird count and to register go to www.gbbc.birdcount.org
I spent yesterday on the beach in Cayucos. It was a glorious day and I was counting and tallying like crazy until the kids came down with the Labrador Retrievers. I’m heading back to the beach now – no dogs allowed!
I didn’t know about this event and yet I love watching birds in my yard. Do you need to know the names of the birds to participate?
