National Dog Day!

It’s National Dog Day – time to pamper our pooches! Tuesday, Bosco, and Easton are ready for a party.

Here at A Field Trip Life, books are always a part of every activity.  It also happens to be Mee Mee’s birthday so we all went out to celebrate.

(Koda wasn’t happy because she wasn’t invited to dinner with the birthday girl.)

We love dogs and have two shelved filled with dog books so the question of the evening was – “What are your favorite picture book dog characters?”  Here are some of the selections:

dogs go

Everyone agreed that this was the book that made them readers. We have never tired of Go, Dog. Go! by P.D. Eastman and often give it as a gift.

Who wouldn’t want to be up in a tree with these dogs?

Carl from Good Dog, Carl (and many more in the series) by Alexandra Day is also a favorite. Carl is the greatest baby sitter ever.

My children have a soft spot for McDuff. In McDuff Moves In by Rosemary Wells and illustrated by Susan Jeffers,  we read about a little  lost dog searching for something to eat and a place to sleep. Fortunately, he finds a cozy home with Fred and Lucy.

McDuff is very happy in his home but that changes in the sequel, McDuff and the Baby.

“McDuff gave the baby terrible squinting looks. The baby didn’t care at all.”

We can’t forget Harry who hates baths.

Harry manages to escape at bath time and spends a glorious day getting dirty. When he goes home, his family doesn’t recognize him because he has changed from a white dog with black spots to a black dog with white spots. Harry decides that baths aren’t so bad after all.

Our final choice for the evening was Pinkerton, Behave! by Steven Kellogg, which follows the training disasters of a lovable Great Dane puppy  who ends up being a hero.

Do you have any favorite book dogs? We’ll be sharing more of ours this week.

Those are some of my favorite dog books, too. Thanks for highlighting.

My grandkids never get tired of Go, Dog. Go! It helped my oldest to learn to read.

I laugh every time I read it. It is such a great book since it works as a read aloud and as an easy reader.

Happy dog day to your dogs, Claire! I know several of the books you highlight. I also love the picture book Officer Buckle and Gloria. My older kids loved it. It was published in the mid 1990s, I think.
