We’ve arrived at the letter Y on our Library Love journey through the alphabet.
Y is for Young Adult Library Services
Did you know that many libraries have young adult sections? Young adult patrons are defined as teens between the ages of 12 and 18. Many libraries hire librarians and staff who are specially trained to work with this age group.
The Young Adult Library Association has the goal of working with all teens as they face challenges and helping to put them on the path to successful and fulfilling lives. Teenagers have unique needs and libraries are a place when they can come to have their information needs met. Libraries also offer a safe place for teens to meet and learn and they provide access to technology for teens who don’t have computers or internet at home.
Young Adult section contains books of special interest to teens but lots of adults are reading YA books as well.
The YALS is a division of the American Library Association and offers the Printz Award for excellence in Young Adult literature each year.
Y is also for YOU (you can insert your picture here)
Libraries need you and now, with budgets being threatened, they need you more than ever.
So, what can YOU do to help libraries?
- Use your library. They offer the best deals in town.
- Take your children and grandchildren to the library so they can know what great places they are.
- Become a Friend of the Library. These groups advocate for libraries, raise money, sponsor special events, and hold used book sales.
- Donate money or your used books for the book sales.
- Contact your Senators and let them know how important your library is to your community. Ask them to sign the FY 2018 Library and Technology Services Act.
Hi Claire – great post … reminding us how important all our libraries are and what specialist services they offer … Young Adults become hooked into reading as they grow up – which makes their education easier … they can read, and they have that skill to grow with as they grow older – and become ‘Us’ … me and you !! Hi Hilary, I think the YA services are really important as are the libraries in school. It is too bad that library budgets always seem to be cut first.

Our library has a Teen Library Council and I can attest to the benefits of having a great Young Adult program.
Also, yes, I do read YA books. I could pretend it’s for research, but that would be a lie.

Having a Young Adult section in a library sounds fantastic. Being a teen is hard, it’s great to hear of libraries doing what they can to support them. 🙂
