T is for Thailand on the A-z Blog Challenge “Read Your World”

April 23, 2015 Claire Annette Noland 10 Comments

We are heading into the home stretch on this year’s A to Z April Blog Challenge. I feel like I’ve really been traveling as I’ve visited many places via books. I’ve met other bloggers and am enjoying the sense of camaraderie with other challenge participants. Today I could have booked it to Tanzania, Turkey, or Trinidad but a fellow writer/blogger, Trine Grillo, suggested Thailand where one of her favorite books is set.

The Umbrella Queen
by Shirin Bridges (Author) and Taeeun Yoo (Illustrator)
Harper Collins Publishers
picture book ages 4-8

Noot is a little girl who lives in the mountains of Thailand with her family. The people of the village make umbrellas and the women and girls paint them.  Each year, the painter of the most beautiful umbrella is honored by becoming the Umbrella Queen in the New Year’s parade.

Noot longs to be an umbrella painter and is finally old enough to learn. She paints the traditional butterflies and flowers but then, her imagination takes over and she paints pictures of elephants. Her family says this is not right and she must paint in the traditional style because this is how they make their living. Noot follows directions but also makes her own tiny umbrellas which she paints in own her unique style. This year, the king is invited to choose the best umbrella. When he comes to the village, all the umbrellas are displayed in front of each painter’s home. Noot’s mother is thrilled when he stops in front of their home and compliments her umbrellas. Then, he sees and asks about the small umbrellas lined up inside the window. Noor admits that she made them and when asked why she didn’t paint butterflies or flowers she simply replies, “because I like elephants.” The king chooses Noot as the Umbrella Queen because “she paints from the heart.”

I love the book’s colorful illustrations showing the village and the umbrella makers in Thailand. This is a lovely book that celebrates creativity. The process of umbrella making is very interesting as well as the New Year’s tradition of the Umbrella Parade.

Here is an interesting article about umbrellas made in Thailand.

As part of the A to Z Blogging Challenge I have been visiting the blogs of other participants. Some bloggers identified categories for their blogging themes. Here are a few that feature animals that you may enjoy:

What a sweet story; I’m glad her umbrellas were picked by the king, I hope it was a valuable lesson learned by the rest of the community to sometimes break out of tradition and go with with your heart.

Yes, it is so easy sometimes to keep the status quo but much more fun to try something different.

Great pic, Claire. Love the illustrations! In some way the theme reminds me of Joan Schoettler’s picture book. Doesn’t it ring a familar bell?
The umbrelllas are gorgeous and it is indeed a Thai tradition.

“What does it mean to be kind anyway?” Is the ques “What does it mean to be kind anyway?” Is the question at the heart of this beautiful picture book which speaks right to a child’s heart. We certainly need kindness and let’s each do our part, no matter how small, and see how that kindness spreads. Thank you @patzmill and @jenhill for writing and illustrating this important book.

King Tides mean not only very high tides but also King Tides mean not only very high tides but also extremely low tides. This afternoon low tide was -1.2 feet. Perfect for exploring tide pools. MY DEAR SEA by Andre Carrillo is another great book for beach goers. My favorite line is
“Try not to trip, protect foot and knee,
And never forget to respect my dear Sea.”

Check out THE WAVE by Suzy Lee ( @chroniclekidsbooks 2008) a beautiful wordless picture book. So much emotion in the deceptively simple art.

New book alert! Mr. Ernie Recommends Hank’s Chang New book alert!
Mr. Ernie Recommends Hank’s Change of Heart by Cindy Williams Schrauben with illustrations by Sasha Richards (The Little Press)
Hank is a collector –of hearts. Day after day searches for things shaped like hearts and then organizes and counts them until it becomes an obsession. He doesn’t want to share until, one day, he sees a girl who needs a heart. “Maybe just one,” he thinks…
This is such a wonderful book about generosity. The joyful, bright illustrations combined with the jaunty read-aloud text will have readers spending time examining each spread and asking for repeated readings. Perfect for all those kids who love to seek, find, and collect.

Happened upon Ghosts at the library on Friday and Happened upon Ghosts at the library on Friday and this graphic novel turned out to be the perfect book for this weekend. A story of new beginnings, family, friendship, traditions, and courage. About spooky with lots of heart.
The authors notes give a great introduction to Dia de Los Muertos as well as information about cystic fibrosis which the younger sister struggles with. The art is rich and wonderful and the coastal California setting is perfect!
