Little Free Library – a great place to meet the neighbors

June 24, 2017 Claire Annette Noland 6 Comments

Our Little Free Library in Cayucos is finally up and open for business!

For any of you unfamiliar with the Little Free Libraries, they are shelters for books where people can take a book and leave a book for others to read. This remarkable concept was begun in Wisconsin by Todd Bol who set up a model of a one room schoolhouse and filled it with books as a tribute to his mother. His friend, Rick Brooks, saw the little library as a way to help contribute to their communities. They built libraries and gave them away. From this simple beginning, and inspired by Andrew Carnegie’s contributions of free public libraries, the idea has spread throughout the world and there are now over 50,000 Little Free Libraries in the U.S. and 70 other countries.

Our home in Cayucos, California is the perfect location for a Little Free Library and thanks to contributions from writer friends, the Casa Miramar Little Free Library is filled with books and is becoming a part of our neighborhood beach community.

The Casa Miramar Library is a simple two story Prairie style that I purchased from the Little Free Library organization. Many people design and build their own libraries but not being handy with tools, I chose this style which will hopefully stand up to salt air and beach weather. I painted it to honor our family’s favorite resort, the Miramar in Santa Barbara, which was unfortunately torn down. It looks a bit plain to me so I plan to jazz it up a bit but haven’t yet decided what to add.

Since I am here only part time I wondered how the library would fare when I was gone. Would it be filled with beat up old text books or trash? I am happy to report that people in the neighborhood are taking good care of it in my absence. The original collection of books are gone and new titles stand on the shelves. People have jotted notes in the ledger. I’m meeting neighbors and vacationers who stop by, introduce themselves, and take a book to read on the beach. Here’s a photo of Roxanne contributing a favorite book:

And a thank you from an appreciative patron:

Since I am primarily interested in Kid Lit, I fill the shelves mostly with children’s books. I’m excited to see that others are also adding books for kids as well as travel books, cookbooks, and the latest best sellers.

According to the map of Little Free Libraries, the Casa Miramar Library is the first in Cayucos. If you find yourself traveling along California’s Central Coast, please stop by 1775 Cass Avenue, Cayucos. Take a book and find a spot on the sand to read. Don’t forget to leave a note!

Is there a Little Free Library in your neighborhood? Check the map to discover the locations of Little Free Libraries.

I found out about the Little Libraries several years ago and even considered opening one in the foothills. Didn’t happen but I applaud your decision. I would be one of your regulars if I lived in Cayucos 🙂

Claire- I can’t wait to come to Cayucos so I can bring a few favorite children’s classics….. And maybe find a new read for me!
This is such a great idea. I’d love to help add decor to Casa Miramar. (I’ll save my ideas to share with you next time we meet up) Marilyn

Gathering Grateful is a warm and cozy celebration Gathering Grateful is a warm and cozy celebration of all the goodness of autumn with the change in season and the gathering together of family. The lyrical verse is deceptively simple and absolutely beautiful when paired with the gorgeous illustrations. Gather with those you love and share this beautiful book as you count your blessings.

“What does it mean to be kind anyway?” Is the ques “What does it mean to be kind anyway?” Is the question at the heart of this beautiful picture book which speaks right to a child’s heart. We certainly need kindness and let’s each do our part, no matter how small, and see how that kindness spreads. Thank you @patzmill and @jenhill for writing and illustrating this important book.

King Tides mean not only very high tides but also King Tides mean not only very high tides but also extremely low tides. This afternoon low tide was -1.2 feet. Perfect for exploring tide pools. MY DEAR SEA by Andre Carrillo is another great book for beach goers. My favorite line is
“Try not to trip, protect foot and knee,
And never forget to respect my dear Sea.”

Be careful of the waves- they can sneak up on you.
Check out THE WAVE by Suzy Lee ( @chroniclekidsbooks 2008) a beautiful wordless picture book. So much emotion in the deceptively simple art.

New book alert! Mr. Ernie Recommends Hank’s Chang New book alert!
Mr. Ernie Recommends Hank’s Change of Heart by Cindy Williams Schrauben with illustrations by Sasha Richards (The Little Press)
Hank is a collector –of hearts. Day after day searches for things shaped like hearts and then organizes and counts them until it becomes an obsession. He doesn’t want to share until, one day, he sees a girl who needs a heart. “Maybe just one,” he thinks…
This is such a wonderful book about generosity. The joyful, bright illustrations combined with the jaunty read-aloud text will have readers spending time examining each spread and asking for repeated readings. Perfect for all those kids who love to seek, find, and collect.

Happened upon Ghosts at the library on Friday and Happened upon Ghosts at the library on Friday and this graphic novel turned out to be the perfect book for this weekend. A story of new beginnings, family, friendship, traditions, and courage. About spooky with lots of heart.
The authors notes give a great introduction to Dia de Los Muertos as well as information about cystic fibrosis which the younger sister struggles with. The art is rich and wonderful and the coastal California setting is perfect!
