Bedtime Daddy! – a new book to add to your bedtime routine

June 12, 2020 Claire Annette Noland 5 Comments

In our house bedtime was a marathon. What should have been an easy, calm routine became, shall we say, wild. It’s a challenge getting four kids to bed but, my husband was really the instigator. He took his role as the official bedtime reader seriously and liked to dramatize every story in the pile. Finally, when all was quiet, I’d go into the room and find them all asleep on a bed together. Today I’m sharing a book that was released just in time for Father’s Day. I wish this one had been in our repertoire:

 BEDTIME DADDY!

By Sharon Giltrow (author) and Katrin Dreiling (illustrator)
EK Books May 2020
Picture book for ages 3-7
Setting: home
Themes: bedtime, reading, father/child relationships
Picture book for ages: 3-7

The story begins-

When you see your daddy rub
His eyes and stifle a yawn,
Announce, “Bedtime, Daddy!”

It’s bedtime and Daddy Bear doesn’t want to go to bed. He cries and dawdles through the bedtime routine as his bear cub encourages him to put on his pajamas, brush his teeth, and get into bed. Daddy has excuses, fears of monsters, and wants another story. In a twist, all is well and the reader is in on the joke.

Why you need to add Bedtime Daddy to your bookshelf:

  1. We all need a laugh at bedtime. Bedtime Daddy is hilarious.
  2. The bright, child-like illustrations are delightful. I love the expressions on Daddy’s face. My favorite is the picture in the bathroom. Kid humor at its best.
  3. Children will see themselves in the pages as they read about familiar bedtime routines with a twist
  4. Written in a “how to” format, Bedtime Daddy provides a fun way to learn about sequencing. Children can discuss and compare their own bedtime routines.
  5. Bedtime Daddy is silly and fun but it also has warmth as the love between Daddy Bear and his cub is evident.
  6. We all need new bedtime books!

Here is your very own Bedtime Bingo. (just copy and past the image)

The lyrical verse is deceptively simple and absolutely beautiful when paired with the gorgeous illustrations. Gather with those you love and share this beautiful book as you count your blessings.

“What does it mean to be kind anyway?” Is the ques “What does it mean to be kind anyway?” Is the question at the heart of this beautiful picture book which speaks right to a child’s heart. We certainly need kindness and let’s each do our part, no matter how small, and see how that kindness spreads. Thank you @patzmill and @jenhill for writing and illustrating this important book.

King Tides mean not only very high tides but also King Tides mean not only very high tides but also extremely low tides. This afternoon low tide was -1.2 feet. Perfect for exploring tide pools. MY DEAR SEA by Andre Carrillo is another great book for beach goers. My favorite line is
“Try not to trip, protect foot and knee,
And never forget to respect my dear Sea.”

Be careful of the waves- they can sneak up on you.
Check out THE WAVE by Suzy Lee ( @chroniclekidsbooks 2008) a beautiful wordless picture book. So much emotion in the deceptively simple art.

New book alert! Mr. Ernie Recommends Hank’s Chang New book alert!
Mr. Ernie Recommends Hank’s Change of Heart by Cindy Williams Schrauben with illustrations by Sasha Richards (The Little Press)
Hank is a collector –of hearts. Day after day searches for things shaped like hearts and then organizes and counts them until it becomes an obsession. He doesn’t want to share until, one day, he sees a girl who needs a heart. “Maybe just one,” he thinks…
This is such a wonderful book about generosity. The joyful, bright illustrations combined with the jaunty read-aloud text will have readers spending time examining each spread and asking for repeated readings. Perfect for all those kids who love to seek, find, and collect.

Happened upon Ghosts at the library on Friday and Happened upon Ghosts at the library on Friday and this graphic novel turned out to be the perfect book for this weekend. A story of new beginnings, family, friendship, traditions, and courage. About spooky with lots of heart.
The authors notes give a great introduction to Dia de Los Muertos as well as information about cystic fibrosis which the younger sister struggles with. The art is rich and wonderful and the coastal California setting is perfect!
