Lila Lou’s Little Library – a picture book for book lovers

October 8, 2021 Claire Annette Noland 6 Comments

Welcome to today’s bookish field trip! I’m so excited to share this new release from my Cardinal Rule Press Publishing sibling.

LILA LOU’S LITTLE LIBRARY: A GIFT FROM the HEART
by Nikki Bergstresser (author) and Sejung Kim (illustrator)
Cardinal Rule Press Publishing 2021
A Field Trip to a Little Free Library

Themes: Books, Generosity, Problem Solving

The story begins:

Lila Lou loved to read. Morning, noon, and night, her nose was buried in a book.

From this first sentence on, I knew that Lila Lou was a character after my heart.

Lila Lou loves to read and get lost in her books – literally! Books are taking over the house and her mother even finds her reading in a fort made of books! When her mother explains, again, that there are too many books, Lila Lou playfully suggests getting a bigger house but knows she has to do something.  She figures out a way to share her books by creating a little library for the neighborhood. Not only does her generosity bring the neighborhood together, Lila Lou finds out that she also has new supply of books to read as everyone exchanges and shares their books.

Why you need to add LILA LOU’S LITTLE LIBRARY: A GIFT FROM the HEART to your book shelves:

  • Lila Lou’s Little Library tells the story of a determined book lover who is a clever and creative problem solver. I love her glasses!
  • Not only is this a wonderful story for book lovers but the actual book is an interactive delight. There’s glitter on the cover, fabulous end pages, and the reader gets to turn the book vertically to read one spread and get the full view of Lili Lou’s collection.
  • The bright and cheerful illustrations show a diverse community and the fun text with Spanish vocabulary interspersed throughout. Non-Spanish speakers can figure word meanings through the context.
  • There are pre-reading tips for parents and teachers.
  • The backmatter includes suggestions for ways to build a family library and different ways to share books as well as a glossary of Spanish words used.
  • Lila Lou’s Little Library a perfect read-aloud for families, classrooms, and library story hour.

Author Nikki Bergstresser and her family enjoy challenging themselves by building amazing structures with LEGOs. Take a look at this incredible LEGO mosaic they made! It is over three feet tall and will accompany Nikki on her author visits.

And… here’s the book in my Little Free Library. I know whoever finds it will be a happy reader.

Gathering Grateful is a warm and cozy celebration Gathering Grateful is a warm and cozy celebration of all the goodness of autumn with the change in season and the gathering together of family. The lyrical verse is deceptively simple and absolutely beautiful when paired with the gorgeous illustrations. Gather with those you love and share this beautiful book as you count your blessings.

“What does it mean to be kind anyway?” Is the ques “What does it mean to be kind anyway?” Is the question at the heart of this beautiful picture book which speaks right to a child’s heart. We certainly need kindness and let’s each do our part, no matter how small, and see how that kindness spreads. Thank you @patzmill and @jenhill for writing and illustrating this important book.

King Tides mean not only very high tides but also King Tides mean not only very high tides but also extremely low tides. This afternoon low tide was -1.2 feet. Perfect for exploring tide pools. MY DEAR SEA by Andre Carrillo is another great book for beach goers. My favorite line is
“Try not to trip, protect foot and knee,
And never forget to respect my dear Sea.”

Be careful of the waves- they can sneak up on you.
Check out THE WAVE by Suzy Lee ( @chroniclekidsbooks 2008) a beautiful wordless picture book. So much emotion in the deceptively simple art.

New book alert! Mr. Ernie Recommends Hank’s Chang New book alert!
Mr. Ernie Recommends Hank’s Change of Heart by Cindy Williams Schrauben with illustrations by Sasha Richards (The Little Press)
Hank is a collector –of hearts. Day after day searches for things shaped like hearts and then organizes and counts them until it becomes an obsession. He doesn’t want to share until, one day, he sees a girl who needs a heart. “Maybe just one,” he thinks…
This is such a wonderful book about generosity. The joyful, bright illustrations combined with the jaunty read-aloud text will have readers spending time examining each spread and asking for repeated readings. Perfect for all those kids who love to seek, find, and collect.

Happened upon Ghosts at the library on Friday and Happened upon Ghosts at the library on Friday and this graphic novel turned out to be the perfect book for this weekend. A story of new beginnings, family, friendship, traditions, and courage. About spooky with lots of heart.
The authors notes give a great introduction to Dia de Los Muertos as well as information about cystic fibrosis which the younger sister struggles with. The art is rich and wonderful and the coastal California setting is perfect!
