Notes from the Field – The Olympic Edition

August 22, 2016 Claire Annette Noland 2 Comments

I admit it. I am an Olympic junkie. As a child, our family gathered around the television every four years and binge watched the Olympics. I rarely watch television these days but always make an exception for the Olympics. Now that the 2016 games in Rio are over, I’ve decided to revisit and share some of the Olympic things I’ve been reading and thinking about to soften the effects of Olympic Withdrawal.

Since I wasn’t able to travel to Rio, I did the next best thing and read about it.

oly bella and harry

The Adventures of Bella & Harry – Let’s Visit Rio de Janeiro by Lisa Manzione (author) and Kristine Lucco (illustrator) is a picture book featuring delightful canines, Bella and Harry, who accompany their family to Rio. The dogs enjoy Copacabana Beach, try different foods and drinks, visit the important sites, and learn a number of Portuguese phrases in the process. This is one in a series of books featuring Bella and Harry and it is a good introduction for young children.

For some other great Olympic books for kids check out this post from one of my favorite blogs, Kid Lit Frenzy.

Do you remember when both the summer and Winter Olympics were held in the same year? My kids didn’t believe me but it’s true! According to this Los Angeles Times article, the decision was made in 1986 to separate the winter and summer games after the 1992 Olympics.olympics barcelona 1992

American television certainly focuses on athletes from the U.S. I wish there was more coverage about the athletes from other countries. To me, this is what makes the Olympics so powerful. Each athlete has an amazing story of how they became Olympians. I am going to continue to search these stories out. I especially hope that we can continue to learn more about the Refugee Olympic Team and what happens to them after they leave Rio.

It is also heartwarming to see the relationships that develop between athletes from different countries.

This photo of the North Korean and South Korean gymnasts taking a selfie shows why the Olympics are so important.

I normally don’t watch track and field but this year I was swept up by the remarkable sportsmanship and ability of Team USA.

Watching the US Olympic women’s gymnastics team was the most thrilling athletic competition I have ever seen. I just wish that it had not been televised so late. I woke up on the couch many nights and then needed to try to watch it the next day to see what I had missed.

olym women's team

Have you seen this great MTV video comparing today’s Olympic gymnasts from those that competed in the 50’s and 60’s?

Many sports were televised during the day so I actually spent a morning watching Synchronized Swimming. I am now fascinate by this sport. Those ladies moved underwater in unison and never stopped smiling. Their uniforms, hair, and makeup were amazing!

Speaking of uniforms –

Why do the Women’s Beach Volleyball competitors wear bikinis and not the same uniforms as indoor volleyball players?

Why are women’s basketball uniforms so baggy?

What about the parents? It was as almost much fun to watch them as it was to watch the athletes perform.

olym parents

There is nothing easy about being the parent of an athlete and these Olympic parents deserve their own gold medals.

While watching the Olympics, my youngest daughter commented on her decision to quit gymnastics. Two of my daughters worked out four days a week, 4 hours a day. The drive was 45 minutes each way. We traveled all over the state for meets. When we realized that they would need to increase their hours and would probably need to begin homeschooling, they made the difficult decision to stop. Gymnastics seems to be a sport where it is all or nothing. The girls went on to play volleyball and soccer. In addition, Roxanne became an equestrian vaulter (gymnastics on horseback). I believe that gymnastics helped them to develop self discipline which has benefited them in all aspects of their lives.

Here is an interesting blog post from Design Mom which explores  the benefits of focusing and being really good at one thing as opposed to being okay at a number of things.

Did you watch the Olympics this year? What is your favorite Olympic moment? favorite Olympic moment?

I had forgotten that they separated the winter and summer Olympics. It seems so long ago that that happened. I don’t have a TV so I didn’t get to see any of the Olympics this year. I would have like to have seen the gymnastics.

You really are an Olympic Games junkie! I don’t watch TV these days but I love the swimming and gymnastic events best. Like you I find the games most moving when they allow athletes from all over the world to meet and befriend each other., away from the competition. I care less for the medals than the achievement of being part of the games. It takes so much will and effort, dedication and pain to be there. I’ll look into the blog you suggest.

Our book/movie club continues. I have to admit, I Our book/movie club continues. I have to admit, I had never read any of the Wimpy Kid Diary books before. I enjoyed #1 in the series. The animated movie was filled with humor and heart with lots of laughs and “awe” moments. The kids give the books and movie 5 stars. I enjoyed them but one book was enough for me.

It’s the last day of summer and a great mail day It’s the last day of summer and a great mail day!
I returned home from the @SCBWICENCAL Writer’s Day to a full mailbox.
I first opened a lovely letter from my dear pen pal friend, Naida. We met when I was new to town because the mail carrier kept delivering mail to the wrong houses. Naida lived at 1203 Campus and I lived around the corner at 1203 Westwood. We bonded over letters and continue to this day (we do love seeing each other in person often).
I also opened a package containing SUNFLOWER HOUSES by Sharon Lovejoy. Years ago, I visited Sharon’s shop, Heart’s Ease in the beautiful town of Cambria. I took the children there to wander the gardens and be inspired to grow our own. We enjoyed her Fairy Festival and whenever I saw her, I knew she was someone I would love to have as a friend. And now we are which makes me so happy!
Finally, I opened an envelope to discover THE SUMMER BOOK, 30th Anniversary edition, by Susan Branch. I think we have made everything in our original copy, and I read it cover-to-cover. I own all of her books, but this is my favorite. Now I can gift the new edition to my children who are making their own memories with their families. Hopefully, I will meet Susan one day as she has moved back to Central California and is a friend of Sharon’s.
Here's to letters, books, friends, and summer days.🌻

Thank you @workmanpubkids for sharing Roots, Shoot Thank you @workmanpubkids for sharing Roots, Shoots, Buckets, and Boots. Our copy is worn and tattered but continues to be loved and used. @sharonlovejoyauthor ‘s books gave me the tools to introduce the wonders of gardening to my children and now my grandchildren.
I just wish Sunflower Houses would come back in print. I love gifting it to young families.🌻@scbwicencal #kidsgardening
EL NIÑO, by Pam Munoz Ryan, is a lush and lyrical EL NIÑO, by Pam Munoz Ryan, is a lush and lyrical middle grade novel for everyone who loves the ocean and mythology. Kai, who is dealing with grief over the loss of his sister, Cali, discovers a book that she had repeatedly checked out about a “Library of Despair and Sorrow” inhabited by mermailens who are charged with protecting feelings that are stored in the library’s vaults. Kai’s life intersects with the mysterious underwater world in dramatic ways. This was the perfect book for a California summer- especially as I read it on a San Diego beach where the book is set.
The book is gorgeous with blue ink and delicate drawings by illustrator Joe Cepeda, that made me feel like I was in the water with Kai. I can’t stop thinking about this one.

It’s #nationalreadabookday and @mrernierecommend It’s #nationalreadabookday and @mrernierecommends and I are enjoying reading Books Travel The World by @joan.schoettler illustrated by @helena.Perez Garcia

This celebration of librarians and readers takes us from Columbia to Thailand to San Francisco and many locations in between. It is extraordinary to see the dedication and perseverance of those who want to make sure that children have books to read. Kids will be fascinated to learn that books are delivered by elephant, ship, and camel. The lyrical, free verse text shares how, in each location, books are shared, and children always request, “One more story, please!”
Each colorful spread is a visual delight showing details of each country, animals, plants, storytellers, and the excited children.
BOOKS TRAVEL the WORLD is a love letter to all who care about books, reading, and accessibility for those in far-flung locations. It offers an appealing invitation to open and share books and is a tribute to those who help readers discover the world through books.
I love Joan's beautiful dedication. ❤️
