The Princess in Black – Two new Adventures!

January 9, 2021 Claire Annette Noland Leave a Comment

I had the great pleasure of being of Cybils Awards round 1 judge again this year in the Easy Reader and Chapter Book categories. I read wonderful books that I may not have had a chance to read and then vote on the best with other judges. There were so many great choices this year that we had a hard time choosing the finalists. Unfortunately, there were books that impressed the judges but just didn’t make the finalist list. Today I’d like to share two that kids will love.

The Princess in Black and the Giant Problem and The Princess in Black and the Bathtime Battle written by Shannon Hale and Dean Hale and illustrated by LeUyen are books seven and eight in the popular Princess in Black Series published by Candlewick Press in 2020 which bring back a familiar cast of characters facing fantastic problems that they need to overcome.

The Princess in Black and the Bathtime Battle finds the Princess and her friend Goat Avenger dealing with rancid cloud stinking up the goat pasture. Unfortunately, as they work to get rid of the smell it blows into the other kingdoms. Fortunately, other masked hero friends and their amazing pet companions arrive to help identify the source of the odor and rid the kingdoms of the stench.

In The Princess in Black and the Giant Problem, the Princess in Black joins her friends Goat Avenger and Princess in Blankets to build a snow monster but a giant arrives and smashes their monster and everything else in his path. The giant is too powerful for them so they call for help. ALL the other princesses in disguise come to the rescue and they celebrate with a snow party.

These two additions to the series are hilarious and filled with puns, twists, and turns and should definitely be added to transitional chapter book collections.

Check out the Princess in Black website to learn more and to download a timely story, The Princess in Black and the Case of the Coronavirus.

Gathering Grateful is a warm and cozy celebration Gathering Grateful is a warm and cozy celebration of all the goodness of autumn with the change in season and the gathering together of family. The lyrical verse is deceptively simple and absolutely beautiful when paired with the gorgeous illustrations. Gather with those you love and share this beautiful book as you count your blessings.

“What does it mean to be kind anyway?” Is the ques “What does it mean to be kind anyway?” Is the question at the heart of this beautiful picture book which speaks right to a child’s heart. We certainly need kindness and let’s each do our part, no matter how small, and see how that kindness spreads. Thank you @patzmill and @jenhill for writing and illustrating this important book.

King Tides mean not only very high tides but also King Tides mean not only very high tides but also extremely low tides. This afternoon low tide was -1.2 feet. Perfect for exploring tide pools. MY DEAR SEA by Andre Carrillo is another great book for beach goers. My favorite line is
“Try not to trip, protect foot and knee,
And never forget to respect my dear Sea.”

#kingtides high tide is 6.9 feet today Be careful #kingtides high tide is 6.9 feet today
Be careful of the waves- they can sneak up on you.
Check out THE WAVE by Suzy Lee ( @chroniclekidsbooks 2008) a beautiful wordless picture book. So much emotion in the deceptively simple art.

New book alert! Mr. Ernie Recommends Hank’s Chang New book alert!
Mr. Ernie Recommends Hank’s Change of Heart by Cindy Williams Schrauben with illustrations by Sasha Richards (The Little Press)
Hank is a collector –of hearts. Day after day searches for things shaped like hearts and then organizes and counts them until it becomes an obsession. He doesn’t want to share until, one day, he sees a girl who needs a heart. “Maybe just one,” he thinks…
This is such a wonderful book about generosity. The joyful, bright illustrations combined with the jaunty read-aloud text will have readers spending time examining each spread and asking for repeated readings. Perfect for all those kids who love to seek, find, and collect.
