Why Movember Makes November Even Better

I love November because Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. This year, we found a new way to make the month even better. Have you heard of Movember? It began as No Shave November when men (mostly college males) stopped shaving for a month. In 1999, some young men came up with the term Movember when they would grow mustaches instead of full beards. In 2004, the Movember Foundation was formed to encourage men to grow mustaches to raise awareness and money for men’s health issues.

Here’s Agent 007, otherwise known as Sawyer, dressed and ready for some Movember action:

Movember proved to be a great theme as my daughters, Lauren and Roxanne, held a “Little Man” mustache baby shower for their sister, Christina Mee. Books were requested to begin a library for Baby B. Here are the two that I brought along:

Mustache Baby by Bridget Heos (author) and Joy Ang (illustrator) Clarion Books

This book has a great beginning – “When Baby Billy was born, his family noticed something odd,”

Sometimes he had a good guy mustache, but sometimes he had a bad guy mustache:

Things turn out okay in the end because the new neighbors have a child Billy’s age and, fortunately,we get to read about these boys in the sequel, Mustache Baby Meets His Match:

New neighbor, Javier, sports a full beard. Billy is excited to have a sidekick but that’s not what Javier wants to be. They become competitors MustacheBaby painting

until finally they realize there is a better solution:

Mustache pardners

These are the books you should read when you want to share a good laugh. The text is brisk and witty and the art is fun and expressive. You can’t help but fall in love with these babies! I’ve read them with students from kindergarten through fifth grade as well as adults. It is rare when books can appeal to a broad age range range these books do just that. And, they make great “little man” shower gifts.

My brother, Frank, is a cancer surviver and is participating in Movember activities. The company he works for is making donations to help fund men’s health resources.

Here’s our favorite man still sporting a mustache after all these years:

And, just for fun, here’s a Youtube video put together by the Movember Foundation.

Have you been doing anything mustache related during Movember?

November is then a really great month! I remember the early days of men sporting a mustache for men’s health awarenesss. The picture book sounds pretty cool and very unusual. Love the baby shower idea and you make me miss my dad who also wore a mustache until his last day. Lovely post to honor men and babies too! See you around, Claire.

Gathering Grateful is a warm and cozy celebration Gathering Grateful is a warm and cozy celebration of all the goodness of autumn with the change in season and the gathering together of family. The lyrical verse is deceptively simple and absolutely beautiful when paired with the gorgeous illustrations. Gather with those you love and share this beautiful book as you count your blessings.

“What does it mean to be kind anyway?” Is the ques “What does it mean to be kind anyway?” Is the question at the heart of this beautiful picture book which speaks right to a child’s heart. We certainly need kindness and let’s each do our part, no matter how small, and see how that kindness spreads. Thank you @patzmill and @jenhill for writing and illustrating this important book.

King Tides mean not only very high tides but also King Tides mean not only very high tides but also extremely low tides. This afternoon low tide was -1.2 feet. Perfect for exploring tide pools. MY DEAR SEA by Andre Carrillo is another great book for beach goers. My favorite line is
“Try not to trip, protect foot and knee,
And never forget to respect my dear Sea.”

Check out THE WAVE by Suzy Lee ( @chroniclekidsbooks 2008) a beautiful wordless picture book. So much emotion in the deceptively simple art.

New book alert! Mr. Ernie Recommends Hank’s Chang New book alert!
Mr. Ernie Recommends Hank’s Change of Heart by Cindy Williams Schrauben with illustrations by Sasha Richards (The Little Press)
Hank is a collector –of hearts. Day after day searches for things shaped like hearts and then organizes and counts them until it becomes an obsession. He doesn’t want to share until, one day, he sees a girl who needs a heart. “Maybe just one,” he thinks…
This is such a wonderful book about generosity. The joyful, bright illustrations combined with the jaunty read-aloud text will have readers spending time examining each spread and asking for repeated readings. Perfect for all those kids who love to seek, find, and collect.

Happened upon Ghosts at the library on Friday and Happened upon Ghosts at the library on Friday and this graphic novel turned out to be the perfect book for this weekend. A story of new beginnings, family, friendship, traditions, and courage. About spooky with lots of heart.
The authors notes give a great introduction to Dia de Los Muertos as well as information about cystic fibrosis which the younger sister struggles with. The art is rich and wonderful and the coastal California setting is perfect!
