LALI’S FEATHER – A Multicultural Children’s Book Day Review

January 30, 2021 Claire Annette Noland Leave a Comment

It’s Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2021
#ReadYourWorld

MCBD, a celebration of the diversity of kidlit, was founded by Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen and is back for its eighth year and I am excited to be supporting the mission of MCBD which helps parents, teachers, librarians and students by increasing awareness of the need for diversity in children’s literature. Publishers and authors generously share their diverse and own voices books so that people like me can share them with people like you. For more information and to join the MCBD Twitter party check out the links I’ve included. I’m thankful to Peachtree Publishing for sharing this book with me for an honest review.

LALI’S FEATHER

By Farhana Zia (author) and Stephanie Fizer Coleman (illustrator)
Peachtree Publishing: 2020
Picture book ages 4-8
Setting: India

The story begins:

“Lali found a feather in the field.
Whose feather? Lali did not know.
Oo ma. Was little feather lost?  Lali
set out to find feather a home.”

Lali searches for the owner of the little lost feather. Could it belong to Rooster, Crow, or Peacock? No, they assure her that this feather is far simple to be theirs. So Lali decides to keep it. She lets the birds know that she will do one hundred things with the feather. She demonstrates the feather’s uses to more birds – Hen, Duck, and Blue Jay. Soon All of the birds are admiring Lali’s clever feather.

When the feather blows away, Lali is distressed and the birds offer her one of theirs. But she wants her little feather that can do so many things. The birds help and the feather is returned and they play with it for the rest of the day.

But the next day, Lali finds a little lost button. Whose could it be?

This gorgeous picture book is written in a classic circular form with lyrical language which makes it a perfect read aloud (believe me when I say that this is one that children will beg to hear again and again.)

The birds are ones that most children will be familiar with and it is fun to see all the creative activities Lali finds to do with her little feather. Highly recommended for story hour and to add color and diversity to your shelves.
