Who Doesn’t Love a Challenge? Blogging A to Z 2016

March 21, 2016 Claire Annette Noland 29 Comments

A2Z-BADGE 2016-smaller_zpslstazvib

It is only 10 days until April and for many bloggers that means it’s time for the annual A to Z Blog Challenge! Perhaps it is fitting that the challenge begins on April Fool’s Day because some would think it foolish to blog daily (except Sundays) with each blog post being written in alphabetical order.

The A to Z Blog Challenge began in 2010 when Arlee Bird encouraged other bloggers to post alphabetically for the month of April.

I’m participating for the third time and am excited to be a member of Pam’s Unconventional Alliance.A to Z Pam's Badge

Our fearless ring leader is A to Z Co-host Pam Margolis who blogs at An Unconventional Librarian. I actually met her in real life at a blogging conference and I know for a fact that she knows how to have a good time. Also joining Pam’s Alliance Team are Shalini, Rajlakshmi, and Parul. You can learn more about us by checking out this post. We’ll be helping Pam by popping in on many blogs to see how things are going.

Many A to Z bloggers choose a thematic approach to blogging through the month and today is the Theme Reveal! So, here’s mine:

Living in a Mermaid World from A to Z!

a to z mermaid tales
I am currently working on a project involving mermaids so I decided to organize my research from A to Z and write posts about what I find. I’ll be sharing books, movies, songs, poetry, and lots of interesting information about mermaids from around the world.

Check in to learn:
• When and where mermaids were first sighted
• Why there is a mermaid on the Starbuck’s logo
• What I will find for the letters Q and Z

It’s not too late to join the party. Here’s the link to the A to Z Sign Up List. Take some time to visit other bloggers participating in the challenge.

Do you have any A to Z mermaid suggestions? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

I love Mermaids! I have one who’s lost a tooth in one of my work-in-progress picture books.

Now, I have a short funny thing that happened to me. I always thought sirens were mermaids, but when I did some research, the Greek sirens are winged creatures. I wonder how those fowl turned into fish. Do you happen to know?

“What does it mean to be kind anyway?” Is the ques “What does it mean to be kind anyway?” Is the question at the heart of this beautiful picture book which speaks right to a child’s heart. We certainly need kindness and let’s each do our part, no matter how small, and see how that kindness spreads. Thank you @patzmill and @jenhill for writing and illustrating this important book.

King Tides mean not only very high tides but also King Tides mean not only very high tides but also extremely low tides. This afternoon low tide was -1.2 feet. Perfect for exploring tide pools. MY DEAR SEA by Andre Carrillo is another great book for beach goers. My favorite line is
“Try not to trip, protect foot and knee,
And never forget to respect my dear Sea.”

New book alert! Mr. Ernie Recommends Hank’s Chang New book alert!
Mr. Ernie Recommends Hank’s Change of Heart by Cindy Williams Schrauben with illustrations by Sasha Richards (The Little Press)
Hank is a collector –of hearts. Day after day searches for things shaped like hearts and then organizes and counts them until it becomes an obsession. He doesn’t want to share until, one day, he sees a girl who needs a heart. “Maybe just one,” he thinks…
This is such a wonderful book about generosity. The joyful, bright illustrations combined with the jaunty read-aloud text will have readers spending time examining each spread and asking for repeated readings. Perfect for all those kids who love to seek, find, and collect.

The authors notes give a great introduction to Dia de Los Muertos as well as information about cystic fibrosis which the younger sister struggles with. The art is rich and wonderful and the coastal California setting is perfect!
