R is for Reference Librarians

April 22, 2017 Claire Annette Noland 6 Comments

My first job after graduating with my Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science was that of a Reference Librarian. Most people don’t realize the skill and training that reference librarians have. All the librarians I know love to learn and to help others find what they need. Shifts at the Reference Desk gave our brains a workout. Over the span of a few hours questions would range from patrons wanting to know

  • What the yen was worth last Wednesday
  • who was in the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
  • a list of everyone related to the Queen of England
  • whether the Wizard of Oz was fiction or nonfiction
  • What animal Naugahyde comes from
  • If we had any Shakespeare books written in English

Patrons often would bring things like rocks, tree branches and insects in and ask for our help in identifying them. All this searching came in handy – I could answer most questions while watching  Jeopardy and almost always won games of Trivial Pursuit.

Reference librarians need to be at the top of their game when helping people look for books such as:

Washing Elephants
The Lion With the Wardrobe
Less Miserables
The Hiding Place by Carrington Boone

How Teela Killed a Mocking bird
Nighttime with the Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Sir Gawain and the Green Mile.
Bury the Head that Wounded Me
The Red Bag of Courage

The job of Reference Librarians has changed in this age of Google but they are still the heart and soul of libraries and are there to help everyone!

Hi Claire – I don’t think I have … but it’s only recently that I’ve started asking questions – it is now full steam ahead … I think I’d have like to be a librarian … probably because I know enough to do it … perhaps I’ll do an overview course at some stage – for the learning process! Cheers Hilary

Hi Hilary. I actually think most library programs are online. I like going to a class and meeting people so I’m glad I got my degree back in the day.

the titles that people come up with are so funny and dead-on.

I’ve only asked a question once to an librarian but mostly I was pointed to the area with the cards in little drawers but they are useful if you really need them. so google is faster but I think an answer from a real person is better.

    have a lovely day.

Hi issa, I don’t think librarians use card catalogs any more. Google is fast but librarians are very clever in their searches so I think it helps to use both google and librarians.

Eek! I love the list of questions here– and the titles are solid gold!!! And reference librarians have been of help to me at various times, though I’ve never, so far as I can remember, brought any of my rocks (I do have a rock collection; I started it when I was a kid, and I still occasionally add to it now) to one. I did once venture into the office of a geologist at my college to get a rock identified, though.

Hi Melanie – lots of great things happening at the library. Librarians need a good sense of humor.

King Tides mean not only very high tides but also King Tides mean not only very high tides but also extremely low tides. This afternoon low tide was -1.2 feet. Perfect for exploring tide pools. MY DEAR SEA by Andre Carrillo is another great book for beach goers. My favorite line is
“Try not to trip, protect foot and knee,
And never forget to respect my dear Sea.”

Be careful of the waves- they can sneak up on you.
Check out THE WAVE by Suzy Lee ( @chroniclekidsbooks 2008) a beautiful wordless picture book. So much emotion in the deceptively simple art.

New book alert! Mr. Ernie Recommends Hank’s Chang New book alert!
Mr. Ernie Recommends Hank’s Change of Heart by Cindy Williams Schrauben with illustrations by Sasha Richards (The Little Press)
Hank is a collector –of hearts. Day after day searches for things shaped like hearts and then organizes and counts them until it becomes an obsession. He doesn’t want to share until, one day, he sees a girl who needs a heart. “Maybe just one,” he thinks…
This is such a wonderful book about generosity. The joyful, bright illustrations combined with the jaunty read-aloud text will have readers spending time examining each spread and asking for repeated readings. Perfect for all those kids who love to seek, find, and collect.

The authors notes give a great introduction to Dia de Los Muertos as well as information about cystic fibrosis which the younger sister struggles with. The art is rich and wonderful and the coastal California setting is perfect!

Our book/movie club continues. I have to admit, I Our book/movie club continues. I have to admit, I had never read any of the Wimpy Kid Diary books before. I enjoyed #1 in the series. The animated movie was filled with humor and heart with lots of laughs and “awe” moments. The kids give the books and movie 5 stars. I enjoyed them but one book was enough for me.

It’s the last day of summer and a great mail day! It’s the last day of summer and a great mail day!
I returned home from the @SCBWICENCAL Writer’s Day to a full mailbox.
I first opened a lovely letter from my dear pen pal friend, Naida. We met when I was new to town because the mail carrier kept delivering mail to the wrong houses. Naida lived at 1203 Campus and I lived around the corner at 1203 Westwood. We bonded over letters and continue to this day (we do love seeing each other in person often).
I also opened a package containing SUNFLOWER HOUSES by Sharon Lovejoy. Years ago, I visited Sharon’s shop, Heart’s Ease in the beautiful town of Cambria. I took the children there to wander the gardens and be inspired to grow our own. We enjoyed her Fairy Festival and whenever I saw her, I knew she was someone I would love to have as a friend. And now we are which makes me so happy!
Finally, I opened an envelope to discover THE SUMMER BOOK, 30th Anniversary edition, by Susan Branch. I think we have made everything in our original copy, and I read it cover-to-cover. I own all of her books, but this is my favorite. Now I can gift the new edition to my children who are making their own memories with their families. Hopefully, I will meet Susan one day as she has moved back to Central California and is a friend of Sharon’s.
Here's to letters, books, friends, and summer days.🌻

Thank you @workmanpubkids for sharing Roots, Shoot Thank you @workmanpubkids for sharing Roots, Shoots, Buckets, and Boots. Our copy is worn and tattered but continues to be loved and used. @sharonlovejoyauthor ‘s books gave me the tools to introduce the wonders of gardening to my children and now my grandchildren.
I just wish Sunflower Houses would come back in print. I love gifting it to young families.🌻@scbwicencal #kidsgardening
