Thomas times three #atozblogchallenge

April 24, 2017 Claire Annette Noland 2 Comments

We are heading into the final week of the A to Z Blog Challenge where I’ve returned to my librarian roots and have been sharing Library Love. Today is dedicated to the Letter T and I’d like to share two books and the little guy

Tomás and the Library Lady

by Pat Mora (author) and Raul Colon (illustrator) Dragonfly Books, 1997 (picture book for ages 3-8)

This is one of the most beautiful and poignant books about the difference a librarian can make in the life of a child. Based on the childhood of Tomás Rivera who grew up traveling with his immigrant family who worked the fields in Texas and Iowa. Tomás and his brother were entertained by their storytelling grandfather. But one day, his grandfather suggested that Tomás go to the library where he could learn new stories to share with the family. The library became a paradise for Tomás when he met a librarian who offered cold water to drink and brought him just the right books to read.

This kind and intuitive librarian changed this boy’s life. Because of her encouragement, Tomás became fascinated by the written word.  Rivera went on to become a writer, professor, and educational leader. He was the first Hispanic chancellor of the University of California at Riverside where the library now bears his name.

In 1995, Texas State University College of Education established the Tomas Rivera Mexican American Children’s Book Award to honor authors and illustrators who create literature that depicts the Mexican American experience and in honor of Dr. Tomas Rivera, a distinguished alumnus of Texas State University.

Thomas Jefferson Builds a Library

by Barb Rossenstock (author) and John O’Brien (illustrator) Calkins Creek, 2013 (picture book biography for ages 8-11)

Thomas Jefferson was passionate about books. He read everything he could find beginning with the all the books in his father’s library. He began collecting books and created his own library which eventually helped to create the world’s largest library, the Library of Congress. The breezy text and illustrations work perfectly together to capture Jefferson’s love of reading, writing, and books. The author’s note, biographical facts, and quotations help to bring this founding father to life.

And, here is my sweet grandson, Thomas, who has been going with me to the library since he was 5 months old. Our local library has a program for children ages newborn to 3 which is the place to be on Tuesday mornings. You are never too young (or too old) to go to the library.

Thanks for stopping by!

Hi Claire – what a sweetie – apple pie luvlie! Brilliant two books you’ve chosen and I’d never heard of Tomas Rivera … what a pity he died so young – heart attacks really can be so tragic – a good life lost … and Jefferson with his books … Fascinating to read … 85,000 items from Rivera, and then Jefferesons contributions to the new Library – I see fires destroyed some of his collections – cheers – opened my eyes to a few things … Hilary

Gathering Grateful is a warm and cozy celebration Gathering Grateful is a warm and cozy celebration of all the goodness of autumn with the change in season and the gathering together of family. The lyrical verse is deceptively simple and absolutely beautiful when paired with the gorgeous illustrations. Gather with those you love and share this beautiful book as you count your blessings.

“What does it mean to be kind anyway?” Is the ques “What does it mean to be kind anyway?” Is the question at the heart of this beautiful picture book which speaks right to a child’s heart. We certainly need kindness and let’s each do our part, no matter how small, and see how that kindness spreads. Thank you @patzmill and @jenhill for writing and illustrating this important book.

King Tides mean not only very high tides but also King Tides mean not only very high tides but also extremely low tides. This afternoon low tide was -1.2 feet. Perfect for exploring tide pools. MY DEAR SEA by Andre Carrillo is another great book for beach goers. My favorite line is
“Try not to trip, protect foot and knee,
And never forget to respect my dear Sea.”

#kingtides high tide is 6.9 feet today Be careful #kingtides high tide is 6.9 feet today
Be careful of the waves- they can sneak up on you.
Check out THE WAVE by Suzy Lee ( @chroniclekidsbooks 2008) a beautiful wordless picture book. So much emotion in the deceptively simple art.

New book alert! Mr. Ernie Recommends Hank’s Chang New book alert!
Mr. Ernie Recommends Hank’s Change of Heart by Cindy Williams Schrauben with illustrations by Sasha Richards (The Little Press)
Hank is a collector –of hearts. Day after day searches for things shaped like hearts and then organizes and counts them until it becomes an obsession. He doesn’t want to share until, one day, he sees a girl who needs a heart. “Maybe just one,” he thinks…
This is such a wonderful book about generosity. The joyful, bright illustrations combined with the jaunty read-aloud text will have readers spending time examining each spread and asking for repeated readings. Perfect for all those kids who love to seek, find, and collect.

Happened upon Ghosts at the library on Friday and Happened upon Ghosts at the library on Friday and this graphic novel turned out to be the perfect book for this weekend. A story of new beginnings, family, friendship, traditions, and courage. About spooky with lots of heart.
The authors notes give a great introduction to Dia de Los Muertos as well as information about cystic fibrosis which the younger sister struggles with. The art is rich and wonderful and the coastal California setting is perfect!
