Hey, Hey, Hay! Perfect Picture Book Friday

June 8, 2019 Claire Annette Noland 6 Comments

Hi Friends,

Don’t you love this time of year? Everything is so fresh and green. My daily drive takes me through the countryside and I’ve been watching the hay grow, and grow, and grow!
Today I’m joining Susanna Leonard Hill’s Perfect Picture Friday to share a perfect book that’s all about hay!

Title: Hey, Hey, Hay! A Tale of Bales and the Machines That Make Them
Written by: Christy Mihaly
Illustrated by: Joe Cepeda

Published by: Holiday House, 2018 picture book
Suitable for Ages: 4-8
Themes/Topics: Farming, Harvesting, Farm Equipment

Opening lines:

On a cold and wintry day,
I love to break out bales of hay.

The hay smells fresh, like summer sun.
I feed my horses, one by one.

Listen, and I’ll tell the tale
Of storing summer in a bale.

Brief Synopsis: Written in perfect rhyme, this book follows a girl and her mother as they harvest the fresh hay that they’ve grown. Their tractor takes center stage with different attachments that mow, fluff, rake, and bale the hay.

Why I like this book: Hay is such an important crop but so few people know much about it. Also, farm equipment is fascinating! Hey, Hey, Hay! is a celebration of the process of harvesting hay written that is charming and fun. The illustrations are beautiful!

I just had to add a photo of Thomas hanging out on the bales of hay:

Resources: Includes a glossary of haymaking words and a recipe for making “switchel” which is a traditional drink made for thirsty workers at haying time.

Check out this Farm Girl Video –

I love this theme. And I think that every child would find fascinating, if not the process, at least the machines and the bales.

There’s something really intriguing about farm equipment. I saw an amazing vehicle today that helps harvest blueberries.

“What does it mean to be kind anyway?” Is the ques “What does it mean to be kind anyway?” Is the question at the heart of this beautiful picture book which speaks right to a child’s heart. We certainly need kindness and let’s each do our part, no matter how small, and see how that kindness spreads. Thank you @patzmill and @jenhill for writing and illustrating this important book.

King Tides mean not only very high tides but also King Tides mean not only very high tides but also extremely low tides. This afternoon low tide was -1.2 feet. Perfect for exploring tide pools. MY DEAR SEA by Andre Carrillo is another great book for beach goers. My favorite line is
“Try not to trip, protect foot and knee,
And never forget to respect my dear Sea.”

Check out THE WAVE by Suzy Lee ( @chroniclekidsbooks 2008) a beautiful wordless picture book. So much emotion in the deceptively simple art.

New book alert! Mr. Ernie Recommends Hank’s Chang New book alert!
Mr. Ernie Recommends Hank’s Change of Heart by Cindy Williams Schrauben with illustrations by Sasha Richards (The Little Press)
Hank is a collector –of hearts. Day after day searches for things shaped like hearts and then organizes and counts them until it becomes an obsession. He doesn’t want to share until, one day, he sees a girl who needs a heart. “Maybe just one,” he thinks…
This is such a wonderful book about generosity. The joyful, bright illustrations combined with the jaunty read-aloud text will have readers spending time examining each spread and asking for repeated readings. Perfect for all those kids who love to seek, find, and collect.

The authors notes give a great introduction to Dia de Los Muertos as well as information about cystic fibrosis which the younger sister struggles with. The art is rich and wonderful and the coastal California setting is perfect!

Our book/movie club continues. I have to admit, I Our book/movie club continues. I have to admit, I had never read any of the Wimpy Kid Diary books before. I enjoyed #1 in the series. The animated movie was filled with humor and heart with lots of laughs and “awe” moments. The kids give the books and movie 5 stars. I enjoyed them but one book was enough for me.
