July is Blueberry Month and the next best thing to eating blueberries is reading about them.
On my top 10 best picture book list is Blueberries for Sal. This classic, written by Robert McClosky in 1948, follows Little Sal who is “helping” her mother to pick blueberries which will be canned for the winter. On the other side of Blueberry Hill, Mother Bear encourages her cub to eat blueberries in preparation for winter. Both Sal and Cub wander and meet up with very surprised mothers. The illustrations are simple but so expressive and perfectly show the love between a mother and her child. I’ve shared this book at the Berry Lady Farm Store as well as with my kindergarten students. This book is great for making predictions and the children love the humor.
