C is for Classics

April 3, 2019 Claire Annette Noland 4 Comments

I love alphabet books that tell a story and today’s choice is a classic-

Chicka, Chicka, Boom Boom!
by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault (authors) and Lois Ehlert (illustrator)
Simon & Schuster 1989

This rollicking, rhythmic, story begins

Then. All the lowercase letters follow them up the tree in alphabetical order until  the tree bends and the letters all tumble down. Fortunately, their uppercase mamas and papas come out to comfort their little ones and get them off to bed.

but- little a gets out of bed and dares the others to race to the top of the coconut tree. Chicka chicka, BOOM! BOOM!  Here we go again!

With bright  cheerful illustrations and catchy rhyme, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom never grows old. (I’ve been using it with children since 1989 and I’m still not tired of it!) Here are Thomas and Evelyne under a coconut tree in Nicaragua reading the Spanish version, Chica Chica Bum Bum!

And here is another classic that never grows old:

Lyrics
Now what starts with the letter C?
Cookie starts with C
Let’s think of other things
That starts with C
Oh, who cares about the other things?
C is for cookie, that’s good enough for me
C is for cookie, that’s good enough for me
C is for cookie, that’s good enough for me
Oh, cookie, cookie, cookie starts with C
C is for cookie, that’s good enough for me
C is for cookie, that’s good enough for me
C is for cookie, that’s good enough for me
Oh, cookie, cookie, cookie starts with C
Hey you know what?
A round cookie with one bite out of it
Looks like a C
A round donut with one bite out of it
Also looks like a C
But it is not as good as a cookie
Oh and the moon sometimes looks like a C
But you can’t eat that, so…
C is for cookie, that’s good enough for me, yeah!
C is for cookie, that’s good enough for me
C is for cookie, that’s good enough for me
Oh, cookie, cookie, cookie starts with C, yeah!
Cookie, cookie, cookie starts with C, oh boy!
Cookie, cookie, cookie starts with C!
Umm-umm-umm-umm-umm
