This year for the A to Z Blog Challenge, I am marching through the alphabet celebrating ABC books. Today I’d like to give a hand to Hands that communicate.
THE HANDMADE ALPHABET
by Laura Rankin (author and illustrator)
Dial Books 1991
This stunning book features soft pencil illustrations of human hands signing the letters of the alphabet. The hands show the diversity of people with different ages and skin times being represented. Each letter shows the hand not only signing the letter but holding or doing something that begins with each letter. The author/illustrator was inspired to write The Handmade alphabet by her stepson who is deaf. This book is a great introduction to ASL and is one that fascinates children and encourages them to learn ASL.

Aren’t these letter illustrations brilliant?

Brilliant illustrations and great use of signs! Do you know Chuck Baird? He’s one of the greatest deaf artists of our time. Many of his paintings included integrated hand illustrations.- Dragons & Spaceships
