Hooray for Doughnut Day!

June 5, 2015 Claire Annette Noland 6 Comments

The first Friday in June is National Doughnut Day which began in 1938 when the Salvation Army handed out doughnuts and other snacks to American soldiers.

Here at A Field Trip Life we like to celebrate everything with a book. One of our favorites is Homer Price by Robert McCloskey. In the chapter titled The Doughnuts,  Homer is left in charge of his Uncle Ulysses’ diner. Uncle Ulysses invented a doughnut machine and Homer has instructions to make doughnuts for the after movie crowd.  A rich lady comes in and helps him mix up a delicious batch using her family recipe. The machine malfunctions and won’t turn off so doughnuts quickly pile up.

Then, the rich lady discovers that her bracelet is missing and must be in one of the doughnuts.

Watch the movie if you can. It’s hilarious.

I made super easy peach “doughnuts” with a group of kindergartners.

doughnut peaches

You need:
One peach per person
Vanilla Yogurt
Sprinkles

Slice the peaches cross-ways and gently pull away from the pits
Top with vanilla yogurt and add the sprinkles

Have a great Doughnut Day. Do you have a favorite!

Many doughnut shops a giving out free doughnuts today. I’m off to the doughnut shop.

Peach Doughnuts…Now that is my kind of doughnut! Sounds like a cute book. You can’t go wrong with Robert McClosky.

Hi Trine, it’s a great recipe for the kids who eat gluten free and perfect for this time of year as the peaches are coming off of the trees.

Never heard of Natl. Doughnut Day before, but a friend posted it on facebook and my husband said a co-wroker texted him, that he should pick up donoughts at Grandma’s (a really good bakery down the street from us) since it was doughnot day.

You learn new things everyday. Neat to know it was started by The Salvation Army that long ago.

The peach donuts are cool and healthy! I discovered donuts when I lived in New England and still buy one at the beginning of the weather when I return to Maine. But I had no idea about this speacial day and I must say that although I am currently in Maine I didn’t see anything about it in Friday. I must have walked on the wrong sidewalk in town!
Another great and fun post, Claire.

I volunteered to bring donut holes to my daughter’s kinder graduation last week- it was an item on the sign up list. I’d intended to make my own donut holes, just to try out this recipe I found online. But time caught up with me and we ended up getting our donuts from Safeway, which my husband cut into pieces.

    Your recipe looks like fun!
