How to Play Basketball – A Multicultural Children’s Book Day Review

January 29, 2021 Claire Annette Noland Leave a Comment

It’s Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2021
#ReadYourWorld
MCBD, a celebration of the diversity of kidlit, was founded by Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen and is back for its eighth year.
Bloggers and kidlit creators are celebrating diversity in children’s books in order to create a data base for teachers, parents, librarians, and children who need to see themselves represented in books as well as learn about others. Authors and publishers have generously shared books so that folks like me can share them with you. For more invitation and to participate in the Twitter party, please check out the links.

I am sharing a number of books today beginning with:

HOW TO PLAY BASKETBALL
By Lawance Turner (author) and Alycia Mulgrew (editor)
Xochitl Justice Press

Themes: Basketball, Sportsmanship, Friendship

The story begins –

Basketball is fun because you get to play with your friends.

Synopsis:

This easy reader features a group of black boys as they explain how to play basketball. The text is clear and easy to read. Vocabulary is highlighted and explained within the text. The book is illustrated with actual photographs of the boys playing and demonstrating the different aspects of the sport.

This book will appeal to young athletes who will be excited to find a book that they can read themselves.

It is great to see a book celebrating young black boys who obviously love basketball. I only wish that girls had also been included.

Thank you to Lawrance Turner and Xochitl Justice Press for the opportunity to review HOW TO PLAY PASKETBALL.
