Pen the Tale, Oogie

August 16, 2017 Claire Annette Noland 3 Comments

Most of us have stories to share but struggle when trying to write them down. Writing isn’t easy. And, if you have dealt with writer’s block, ideas that turn out to not be original, and rejection, then I have a book for you written, illustrated, and published here in Central California.

Pen the Tale, Oogie by Karen J. Moore (author) and Doug Hansen (illustrator)
Picture book ages 3-8  (Barn Owl Media 2016)

tells the story of Oogie, the forest’s great and wonderful story teller, worries about the animals missing stories while he hibernates. His friend,Fox, suggests he write down his stories so the animals can read them all winter.

Oogie faces a blank piece of paper but can’t think of anything to write. He finally comes up with an idea but Fox lets him know that it has been done before.

Oogie tries again, and then again.

Finally, Fox, (a great editor) gives him some wise advice and Oogie is finally able to write all sorts of original stories for his friends.

Doug Hansen’s lush illustrations glow on each page. The forest setting and characters are charming and Oogie’s feelings of worry, frustration, and joy are captured perfectly.

Pen the Tale, Oogie is a splendid example of the writing process. Although intended for young children, all students (and adults) who struggle with writing will enjoy watching Oogie become an author. This delightful book is fun to read aloud and will give students a springboard for their own writing as they learn that “the best stories come from your heart.”

Sounds like a fun inspirational book on the process of writing, Claire. Love Doug Hansen’s work as an illustrator.
