Yummy”
Eight Favorite Fairy Tales
Retold and Illustrated by Lucy Cousins
Candlewick Press 2009
I don’t think you can ever be too old for Fairy Tales. I have been collecting them most of my life and have editions that span almost one hundred years. This collection by Lucy Cousins is, in a word, Yummy. The eight stories in the collections are ones very familiar to young children including Little Red Riding Hood, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and The Turnip. The language is clear and concise and pre-reading children will be able to join in as the stories are being read. Young readers will be able to read it on their own. The more gruesome aspects of the stories are not eliminated but told in a matter-of-fact manner suitable for young children.
What makes this book so yummy are the illustrations. The art is done with simple but expressive lines and the colors are glorious. Text winds around the characters and the result is a book begging to be read over and over.
If you are going to get one fairy tale collection for your class or family, get this one.
I’m pairing a recipe that children can make with each story. We’ve made porridge, bread, and muffins but haven’t tried turnips yet.
Do you still read Fairy Tales?

I loved fairy tales when I was a kid. The scarier the better! This picture book sounds yummy. I love the idea to pair each story with a cooking lesson.
With a title like Yummy it”s a must.
Bon appetit!
