There’s nothing more exciting than Field Trip Days. It is the chance to get out of a desk and do something different. Lunch is packed in a paper bag. You line up and board the bus and head off!
You can also go along on a field trip with friends in books. Here’s a few to begin with:
Amelia Bedelia’s First Field Trip by Herman Parish. Illustrated by Lynne Avril.
This picture book takes our good friend, Amelia Bedelia, back to her childhood where she goes on a field trip to a farm. She learns about green thumbs and an alarm clock that is really a rooster. All the children do chores to prepare lunch and you can just imagine what happens when Amelia is assigned the task of tossing the salad. This book is lots of fun!
The Apple Orchard Riddle by Margaret McNamara. Illustrated by G. Brian Karas.
When Mr. Tiffin and his class take a field trip to an apple orchard, they learn all about apple varieties, apple harvesting, and how apple cider is made. The students are given a riddle, “Show me a little red house with no windows and no door, but with a star inside,” which they try to solve. Tara takes this challenge seriously and finally comes up with the solution. This is a good book to share before heading out with baskets to the apple orchards in the fall.
The Magic School Bus by Joanna Cole. Illustrated by Bruce Degan.
This is the classic field trip series in which Mrs. Frizzle takes her students just about everywhere. Scholastic is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Magic School Book series. There are now Magic School Books in easy reader and chapter book form as well as the original books. Mrs. Fizzle has always been my role model as a teacher – who wouldn’t want her awesome wardrobe?
