KING & KAYLA and the Case of the Unhappy Neighbor – A Multicultural Children’s Book Day Review

Once again, I am excited to be sharing diverse books as part of Multicultural Children’s Book Day. The goal is to share books that celebrate diversity so that children can see kids like themselves in the pages of books as well as learn about others. It is certainly time to diversify our bookshelves.

Happily for fans of King and Kayla, one of our favorite kidlit detective teams is back in action. In this new case, there’s a case of mistaken identity when Kayla’s friend Jillian’s puppy gets blamed for knocking over a grumpy neighbor’s trash can. The puppy, named Thor, likes to dig under fences and ends up in the wrong place at the wrong time. Kayla and King deduce that Thor isn’t big enough to knock over a trash can and certainly wouldn’t be eating the fruits and vegetables that were in there. Fortunately, King and Kayla (who is black) figure out what is going on. Young readers will enjoy solving the mystery as they put the clues together.

Written in large type with full color illustrations this is a great addition to a diverse early chapter book collection.
