I’m celebrating Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2021

NINA SONI: Former Best Friend
by Kashmira Sheth (author) and Jenn Kocmiersky
Peachtree Publiishing: 2019
Setting: home and school
Themes: friendship, family, problem solving
In this first title of a new series, written by #ownvoices author, Kashmira Sheth, we are introduced to a spunky but absent-minded Indian-American girl named Nina. She is always making lists but is easily distracted and often forgets things. Nina needs to repair a friendship, help her mom put on a party, and finish the project she’s forgotten about until it’s almost too late.
Nina’s Indian-American culture is highlighted throughout the book as she interacts with family and friends and enjoys traditional foods. Readers in grades two – four will relate to Nina’s lists, worries, math problems, and attempts to put a science project together. Black and white illustrations are a welcome part of this book.
This is a great choice for those developing diverse and inclusive children’s book collections. Highly recommended for chapter book readers who enjoy realistic fiction.
This book was generously shared with me by Peachtree Publishing so that I could write an unbiased review and share it with readers like you.
Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2021 (1/29/21) is in its 8th year! Eight years in, MCBD’s mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in homes and school bookshelves continues.
