This is a great weekend. It is time to get out and join the Great Backyard Bird Count.
The GBBC is an annual event begun in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society. It is a four-day event held in February with the goal of creating an overview of the number and locations of bird populations. It was the first online citizen science project and has grown over the years to include thousands of participants of all ages. For information on the bird count and to register go to birdcount.org
As many of you know, I love birds and in my picture book RAVEN’S GIFT: A Feathered Flight of Faith, (illustrated by Alicia Teba and published by Bless This Press) is all about my winged friends.
The birds in my book, Raven, Owl, Quail, Rooster, Hen, and Quail are Biblical birds that live in the Holy Land but they also can be found near my home in Central California. I’ll be on the lookout for these birds as well as may others.
It’s easy to participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count. Just go outside and spend at least fifteen minutes looking for birds.
Suggested supplies:
- Clip board
- pencil
- Tally sheet (download included)
- Binoculars (if you have them) bird identification book or
- Merlin ID App
Be on the lookout for:
- Size
- Color and markings
- Behavior
- Bird calls
You can easily set up an account and add your count to the GBBC data base. You can also upload photos that you take. There’s also a fascinating map that shows the bird locations in real time.
Have fun! Let me know in the comments what birds you find.
