Why Movember Makes November Even Better

November 27, 2015 Claire Annette Noland 4 Comments

I love November because Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. This year, we found a new way to make the month even better. Have you heard of Movember? It began as No Shave November when men (mostly college males) stopped shaving for a month. In 1999, some young men came up with the term Movember when […]

Book of the Week: Primates The Fearless Science of Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, and Birute Galdikas

October 29, 2015 Claire Annette Noland 4 Comments

I am a big fan of graphic novels. During the month of October I have been reading reviews posted by the community at #GNCelebration. Today is the final day so I’ve decided to join the celebration by sharing the graphic novel that I just finished reading. Primates The Fearless Science of Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, and […]

A list-less day

October 24, 2015 Claire Annette Noland 12 Comments

I am a list maker. I developed this habit at an early age. My mother wrote out a “to do” list every day and kept it by the calendar. I do the same. I have lists for groceries to buy, books to read, articles and stories to write, things to repair, and places to go. […]

What would the world be like if oak trees didn’t exist?

October 12, 2015 Claire Annette Noland 8 Comments

California’s Central Valley was once filled with beautiful valley oak trees. Many were cleared for farms and cities but, fortunately, people have come to appreciate these enormous trees and now do what they can to preserve them. I’m happy that we live where oak trees have long been protected and are part of our every […]

It’s a Marvelous Night for a (Super) Moon Dance…

September 26, 2015 Claire Annette Noland 7 Comments

Field trips that can be taken near home often are the best ones. They are usually inexpensive and don’t require a lot of planning. Tomorrow night you can take the perfect field trip just by walking out your door and looking up. There will be a super moon lunar eclipse and that is reason to […]

“What does it mean to be kind anyway?” Is the ques “What does it mean to be kind anyway?” Is the question at the heart of this beautiful picture book which speaks right to a child’s heart. We certainly need kindness and let’s each do our part, no matter how small, and see how that kindness spreads. Thank you @patzmill and @jenhill for writing and illustrating this important book.

King Tides mean not only very high tides but also King Tides mean not only very high tides but also extremely low tides. This afternoon low tide was -1.2 feet. Perfect for exploring tide pools. MY DEAR SEA by Andre Carrillo is another great book for beach goers. My favorite line is
“Try not to trip, protect foot and knee,
And never forget to respect my dear Sea.”

Be careful of the waves- they can sneak up on you.
Check out THE WAVE by Suzy Lee ( @chroniclekidsbooks 2008) a beautiful wordless picture book. So much emotion in the deceptively simple art.

New book alert! Mr. Ernie Recommends Hank’s Chang New book alert!
Mr. Ernie Recommends Hank’s Change of Heart by Cindy Williams Schrauben with illustrations by Sasha Richards (The Little Press)
Hank is a collector –of hearts. Day after day searches for things shaped like hearts and then organizes and counts them until it becomes an obsession. He doesn’t want to share until, one day, he sees a girl who needs a heart. “Maybe just one,” he thinks…
This is such a wonderful book about generosity. The joyful, bright illustrations combined with the jaunty read-aloud text will have readers spending time examining each spread and asking for repeated readings. Perfect for all those kids who love to seek, find, and collect.

Happened upon Ghosts at the library on Friday and Happened upon Ghosts at the library on Friday and this graphic novel turned out to be the perfect book for this weekend. A story of new beginnings, family, friendship, traditions, and courage. About spooky with lots of heart.
The authors notes give a great introduction to Dia de Los Muertos as well as information about cystic fibrosis which the younger sister struggles with. The art is rich and wonderful and the coastal California setting is perfect!

Our book/movie club continues. I have to admit, I Our book/movie club continues. I have to admit, I had never read any of the Wimpy Kid Diary books before. I enjoyed #1 in the series. The animated movie was filled with humor and heart with lots of laughs and “awe” moments. The kids give the books and movie 5 stars. I enjoyed them but one book was enough for me.
