Welcome to my annual MCCBD – Multicultural Children’s Book Day post where I join other book bloggers to celebrate and showcase diverse children’s books. All children need to see children like themselves in the pages of a book and to learn about children who live in other places, speak different languages, look different, or have difficult challenges to face. Reading opens the world to children and helps them to see that people are far more alike than different and share common dreams and aspirations.
This year, I was matched with a book that strikes close to home.

This inspiring story, written by a cancer survivor, begins:
There once was a little green monster…
who used magic to help people…
when they became very sick.
The monster, who actually looks like a large and sweet bird, surrounds those dealing with cancer with comfort and care and helps them to deal with their fears.
Cancer is very scary for patients and their families. The Little Green Monster tackles a tough subject in a child-friendly and imaginative way. It doesn’t shy away from the difficult aspects of cancer including chemo, hair loss, and hospital stays. A multi-racial family is featured as well as a diverse group of patients and medical staff. Overall, the love of this family and how they support each other on both good and bad days shines through with the little green monster surrounding them with comfort and joy.
This book includes a number of features which will be of great value to children including a cancer vocabulary, a feeling chart, and little green monster activities and songs. The Little Green Monster is a great resource to begin difficult conversations that come with a cancer diagnosis. The illustrations are bright and friendly and will help children impacted by a cancer diagnosis for themselves or a loved one.
On a personal level, this book would have been a great resource for my children when their cousin and my brother went through long cancer journeys. The Little Green Monster: Cancer Magic will become a welcome addition to hospital book collections as well as home where families are dealing with cancer.

Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2020 (1/31/20) is in its 7th year! This non-profit children’s literacy initiative was founded by Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen; two diverse book-loving moms who saw a need to shine the spotlight on all of the multicultural books and authors on the market while also working to get those book into the hands of young readers and educators.
Seven years in, MCBD’s mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in homes and school bookshelves continues.
