How Rocks Can Sing

April 20, 2019 Claire Annette Noland 2 Comments

My favorite pastime is walking the beach.  I’ve strolled sandy shores all around the world looking for sea glass but I have found a book that is inspiring me to look for something else.

IF ROCKS COULD SING: A Discovered Alphabet
by Leslie McGuirk
published by Tricycle Press/Random House 2011

Author/illustrator, Leslie McGuirk, enjoyed looking for shells on the beach near her Florida home. She happened to find a rocks that looked like letters and the idea for an alphabet book featuring these found objects was born. She is a patient person. It took her ten years to find the letter K which completed her collection. I am thankful for her perseverance because it resulted in one of the most artistic and creative alphabet books available. If Rocks Could Sing features each letter of the alphabet cleverly accompanied by a rock that illustrates an object or concept starting with that letter.

Here is a rock given to me by my beach walking friend, Marilyn who looks for heart-shaped rocks and has a beautiful collection.

Doesn’t this inspire you to head to the beach and see what you can find?

This post is part of the A to Z April Blog challenge where bloggers use the alphabet to inspire their writing. My theme this year is Alphabet Books.

That’s interesting that K was the last to be found. It sounds like a really fun project for the author!
