Q is for Duck: An Alphabet Guessing Game
by Michael Folsom and Mary Elting (authors) and June K. Kent (illustrator)
Clarion 1980
32 page picture book for preschool – grade 2
This is not your average ABC book. In Q is for Duck, readers need to guess why a certain letter is used. For instance, N is for Cat. Why? (turn the page) Because a cat naps! Children pick up the pattern quickly and are really excited when they get the right answer. This book has been a kindergarten staple for a long time as it encourages children to use their phonemic skills and make connections. Actually, many children go on to make their own alphabet books based on Q is for Duck. The simple cartoon illustrations are humerous and add to the fun of the book.
The book comes full circle at the end. Can you guess why?
This post is my Q entry for the A to Z April Blog Challenge. Here’s a link to the master list if you are interested in seeing how others are blogging through the alphabet.
