March 31, 2016 Claire Annette Noland 7 Comments

There was no sitting around this month – here’s some notes about things seen in March

I found these awesome Field Notes memo books:

There’s a wonderful photography exhibit of Frida Kahlo at the Fresno Art Museum. “Through the Lens of Nickolas Muray,” includes intimate portraits of this iconic artist as well as letters between Frida and the photographer. The exhibit will run through May 1st and is definitely worth a visit if you are in the Fresno area. For more details take a look at the Fresno Art Museum’s website.

Here’s a book for young readers that pairs perfectly with the exhibit:

Frida

Counting with – Contando con Frida by Patty Rodrigues and Ariana Stein. Little Libros 2014 is a bilingual counting board book which introduces English and Spanish numbers.

Frida 3

Check out this article on What Frida Wore posted by the Guardian. After Frida Kahlo died in 1954, Diego Rivera ordered Frida’s clothing to be locked away until fifteen years after his death. The room was not opened until 2004 and her clothing and accessories were photographed by Ishiuchi Miyako.

I went back to Nicaragua and visited the Student International team sites with Michael. Once again I left humbled and inspired. I will be writing more in a future post.

Leslie Jurgenson has started a business called Sunshine Nicaragua. The purpose is to raise funds to help to develop better medical care for children born prematurely in Nicaragua. Leslie’s twins, Andrew and Phillipe, were born at only 26 weeks. They were in the hospital for months and, sadly, Phillipe did not live. Leslie is using her experience and design and business knowledge to make a difference for children born too soon. The purses, diaper bags, and wallets are beautiful. Not only does the sales of Sunshine Nicaragua help children but the business supports four families. If you are interested in these products let me know in a comment. you can learn more on the Sunshine Nicaragua Facebook page.

It was a Mermaid March in Cayucos. Businesses displayed mermaids all through the town. We visited as many as we could. This is Cordelia who graced my favorite store, Happy go Smile.

“What does it mean to be kind anyway?” Is the ques “What does it mean to be kind anyway?” Is the question at the heart of this beautiful picture book which speaks right to a child’s heart. We certainly need kindness and let’s each do our part, no matter how small, and see how that kindness spreads. Thank you @patzmill and @jenhill for writing and illustrating this important book.

King Tides mean not only very high tides but also King Tides mean not only very high tides but also extremely low tides. This afternoon low tide was -1.2 feet. Perfect for exploring tide pools. MY DEAR SEA by Andre Carrillo is another great book for beach goers. My favorite line is
“Try not to trip, protect foot and knee,
And never forget to respect my dear Sea.”

Check out THE WAVE by Suzy Lee ( @chroniclekidsbooks 2008) a beautiful wordless picture book. So much emotion in the deceptively simple art.

New book alert! Mr. Ernie Recommends Hank’s Chang New book alert!
Mr. Ernie Recommends Hank’s Change of Heart by Cindy Williams Schrauben with illustrations by Sasha Richards (The Little Press)
Hank is a collector –of hearts. Day after day searches for things shaped like hearts and then organizes and counts them until it becomes an obsession. He doesn’t want to share until, one day, he sees a girl who needs a heart. “Maybe just one,” he thinks…
This is such a wonderful book about generosity. The joyful, bright illustrations combined with the jaunty read-aloud text will have readers spending time examining each spread and asking for repeated readings. Perfect for all those kids who love to seek, find, and collect.

Happened upon Ghosts at the library on Friday and Happened upon Ghosts at the library on Friday and this graphic novel turned out to be the perfect book for this weekend. A story of new beginnings, family, friendship, traditions, and courage. About spooky with lots of heart.
The authors notes give a great introduction to Dia de Los Muertos as well as information about cystic fibrosis which the younger sister struggles with. The art is rich and wonderful and the coastal California setting is perfect!

Our book/movie club continues. I have to admit, I Our book/movie club continues. I have to admit, I had never read any of the Wimpy Kid Diary books before. I enjoyed #1 in the series. The animated movie was filled with humor and heart with lots of laughs and “awe” moments. The kids give the books and movie 5 stars. I enjoyed them but one book was enough for me.
