Everyone knows the story of the RMS Titanic and how she sank on her maiden voyage on April 14, 1912. There are movies, documentaries, songs, and many books which tell the sad tale. For today’s A to Z blog post, I’d like to share and alphabet book about the Titanic.
T is for Titanic: A Titanic Alphabet
by Michael Shoulders and Debbie Shoulders (authors) and Gijsbert van Frankenhuyzen
Sleeping Bear Press 2011
Nonfiction Alphabet picture book for ages 6-10
A is for Anatomy of the Titanic
The RMS Titanic
included ten decks in all
It was the world’s largest moving
object at 175 feet tall.
This is a well-researched, historically accurate account of the ship’s short-lived journey. For each letter of the alphabet, information is given about a different Titanic topic. For instance, I is for iceberg which we know was a problem. And, for the letter V, we learn about the violinist who played to keep passenger’s fears at bay. This is not an alphabet for young children learning the alphabet but it will be of interest to older children fascinated with the facts surrounding the Titanic.
R is for Rescue
As the Titanic went down
away from view,
the nearby Carpathia
helped in the rescue.
Unfortunately, I think some of the rhyming text is a bit forced but the facts and information are interesting and well written. This book is a great example of the thematic alphabet books which Sleeping Bear Press does so well.

Hi Anne Claire – what an interesting sounding book … seems like a good idea to get people to be interested in particular subjects and learn some new aspects – eg the layout of the decks etc … such an interesting range of books you’ve been showing us – cheers Hilary

These alphabet books are a great way to introduce children to different topics. Actually, adults too!

Such an interesting concept. I would not have imagined a Titanic ABC book.

I think there are alphabet books on just about every topic!

Claire,
Learning facts on a subject using A to Z prompts is a clever, fun way to install learning in anyone at any age. This would be a story that I think I’d enjoy reading to school age children…if I still had any at home. 🙂 Thank you for dropping by to visit my A2Z Little Mermaid art sketch series ‘Treasures’ yesterday. 🙂

That sounds like an interesting book. I loved the movie Titanic. And yes, that song is my all-time favorite too. I still get goosebumps watching this song.

It’s a good introduction to the history of the Titanic but I actually learned a lot from the movie. Thanks for stopping by!

Wow! It looks gorgeous and informative. I like the format. Following the alphabet gives the possibility to explore things about a particular subject that might not be touched in a more traditional exposition (and we AtoZ-ers shoudl know 😉 )
