Whenever I find myself in a new town, I always plan a field trip to a local independent bookstore. There are fewer of these gems around these days and those still in business need to be supported. I will take it upon myself to do just that!
I’m in Los Angeles this weekend and will celebrate California Independent Bookstore Day by going to Vroman’s Bookstore in Pasadena. This has been my favorite store since I was a child and my mother gave me unlimited use of her bookstore account. All I had to do is sign my name! The store is comfort food to my soul and I’ll be there to celebrate tomorrow.

Today, I’m heading to The Last Bookstore in downtown Los Angeles. It is one of the few bookstores that still buys and sells used books. When you have lots of time, it is a great place to wander and discover. The first time I ventured inside, I spent hours on the first floor before even realizing that there was much more upstairs. There’s amazing art made from books, the sales counter is made from books, there are books arranged by color and even a tunnel built from books. It is a book lover’s utopia.
