One of the great things about traveling is seeing how every day life differs from place to place. If you, like me, like to visit markets to see what is on the shelves or participate in activities to learn about people and their traditions then you will enjoy
Here and There
by Susie Rae (author) and Greg Paprocki (illustrator)
Kane Miller Publishing 2018 Conceived by Weldon Owens Imprint
Picture book grades K-6
Did you know that there is a law in Spain requiring children to do their homework and help their parents with chores? Or that people in Denmark smash plates on their front door on New Year’s Eve to ensure good luck? And that you can buy fruit and vegetables on floating market boats in Indonesia? Here and There is a celebration of “our planet’s people, countries, and cultures.” This large and colorful book is divided into chapters which include nature,
festivals,
school lunches,
exercise,
and chores that children do in various countries.
The illustrations by Greg Paprocki are delightfully vintage and celebrate the diversity of children around the world. They remind me of old travel posters and make me want to jump on a plane and visit each place. Hours can be spent in the pages learning about people and places. The positive and well chosen topics and explanations serve as windows to life around the world.
Here and There will be a great addition to and classroom or school library and will serve as a catalyst for fun activities and discussions about people, places, traditions, and customs. This is a book that will appeal to children who love to learn new facts, search detailed illustrations, and travel through the pages of books.
