Valentine’s Day is my favorite holiday and it has gotten even better because it is also International Book Giving Day. I can’t think of a better way for a book lover to celebrate than by giving books.
There are many children who don’t have books or access to them. The purpose of International Book Giving Day is to get books into the hands of children.
I recently returned from Nicaragua with a team from Students International. I went out to the education sites in Nindiri, Masaya. I am still processing my time there but I do know that I returned humbled and inspired. I spent time with kids who have nothing compared to our western standards but they do not view themselves as disadvantaged. They were so excited to come and have the opportunity to learn.
Students International will be working with the residents of this area to build a community center. Elianor, who heads the education site, hopes to include a library for the families. I aim to help her. I was able to bring some books but plan to do much more. I will be collecting children’s books written in Spanish throughout the year. Hopefully the library will be ready to accept the books by International Book Giving Day 2017.
Thomas is celebrating his first Valentine’ Day and I was thrilled to give him Love by Eric Carle. It’s never too early to give books!
I love decorating with Valentine books:
Thank you Ruth Ayers at Ruth Ayres Writes for creating the Celebrate This Week community and #celebratelu.

Lovely picture of you and your baby grandson. You’re right: it’s never too soon to share stories and books.
I gave books too that day!
