Girls on the go at Happy Go Smile

January 10, 2015 Claire Annette Noland 6 Comments

Here at A Field trip Life, I’m always on the lookout for places to go, people to meet, and books to read. Field trips aren’t just for kids. Grownups need to get out and about. And there are times when girlfriends just need to do something a bit different together. Dee, Mary and Naida are […]

Floating into the New Year –

December 31, 2014 Claire Annette Noland 6 Comments

A few months ago my daughter, Roxanne, suggested that we go and decorate the Rose Parade float built by the students at the Cal Poly Universities. I’m always ready for a field trip so we signed up. Unfortunately, Roxanne was scheduled to work on campus so my brother, John, joined me. We kept asking […]

Books of Christmas – Four Favorites

December 25, 2014 Claire Annette Noland 1 Comment

Every year when we bring out the Christmas book collection it seems like we are greeting old friends. We have hundreds of Christmas books many of which have been passed down over the years. We read the books each evening. We decorate with the books and we keep them out long after Christmas is over. […]

A Season of Lights

December 13, 2014 Claire Annette Noland 6 Comments

Not only is it 12-13-14 but it is also the feast day of Santa Lucia, the patron saint of light. We celebrate most holidays and Santa Lucia Day is one of our favorites. It is interesting that a young martyr from Italy has become the center of a Swedish holiday. It is fitting, however that […]

When we met you … a family celebration

Happy Adoption Day by John McCutcheon (author, song writer) and Julie Paschkis was not available when my children were young but I wish it had been. The illustrations and text (originally a song) are bright and cheerful and together make a perfect book to celebrate the arrival of a child. The book follows the parents as […]

“What does it mean to be kind anyway?” Is the ques “What does it mean to be kind anyway?” Is the question at the heart of this beautiful picture book which speaks right to a child’s heart. We certainly need kindness and let’s each do our part, no matter how small, and see how that kindness spreads. Thank you @patzmill and @jenhill for writing and illustrating this important book.

King Tides mean not only very high tides but also King Tides mean not only very high tides but also extremely low tides. This afternoon low tide was -1.2 feet. Perfect for exploring tide pools. MY DEAR SEA by Andre Carrillo is another great book for beach goers. My favorite line is
“Try not to trip, protect foot and knee,
And never forget to respect my dear Sea.”

#kingtides high tide is 6.9 feet today Be careful #kingtides high tide is 6.9 feet today
Be careful of the waves- they can sneak up on you.
Check out THE WAVE by Suzy Lee ( @chroniclekidsbooks 2008) a beautiful wordless picture book. So much emotion in the deceptively simple art.

New book alert! Mr. Ernie Recommends Hank’s Chang New book alert!
Mr. Ernie Recommends Hank’s Change of Heart by Cindy Williams Schrauben with illustrations by Sasha Richards (The Little Press)
Hank is a collector –of hearts. Day after day searches for things shaped like hearts and then organizes and counts them until it becomes an obsession. He doesn’t want to share until, one day, he sees a girl who needs a heart. “Maybe just one,” he thinks…
This is such a wonderful book about generosity. The joyful, bright illustrations combined with the jaunty read-aloud text will have readers spending time examining each spread and asking for repeated readings. Perfect for all those kids who love to seek, find, and collect.

Happened upon Ghosts at the library on Friday and Happened upon Ghosts at the library on Friday and this graphic novel turned out to be the perfect book for this weekend. A story of new beginnings, family, friendship, traditions, and courage. About spooky with lots of heart.
The authors notes give a great introduction to Dia de Los Muertos as well as information about cystic fibrosis which the younger sister struggles with. The art is rich and wonderful and the coastal California setting is perfect!

Our book/movie club continues. I have to admit, I Our book/movie club continues. I have to admit, I had never read any of the Wimpy Kid Diary books before. I enjoyed #1 in the series. The animated movie was filled with humor and heart with lots of laughs and “awe” moments. The kids give the books and movie 5 stars. I enjoyed them but one book was enough for me.
