Three Books for a Pumpkin Patch

October 30, 2014 Claire Annette Noland 1 Comment

Every year my field trip buddy, Carmen, plants an acre of pumpkins at her family’s Bettencourt Farms. She plants a great variety making sure to have giant, tiny, heirloom, and different colored pumpkins. Then she opens her patch to local kids to come and enjoy. I get to be the official pumpkin presenter. Yesterday, Hanford […]

Chronicles From Chateau Moines

October 24, 2014 Claire Annette Noland 4 Comments

One of the best things about books is that they allow you to visit new places as well as other periods of time. I recently traveled to 1970’s Normandy, France through the pages of Chronicles From Chateau Moines by Evelyne Holingue. Set in a small French village, we meet seventh grader Sylvie, who no longer […]

Citizen Science on Coastal Cleanup Day with 3 Ocean Books

October 1, 2014 Claire Annette Noland 3 Comments

Field trips are good for people of all ages. I recently joined up with a group of students from Cal Poly, SLO (translation: California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo) to celebrate Coastal Cleanup Day. Coastal Cleanup Day was first held in Oregon in 1984. California’s Coastal Cleanup Day began the following year and has been […]

Celebrating Sunflowers – #Life is Good

September 8, 2014 Claire Annette Noland Leave a Comment

I am still a blogger-in-training. It takes me a long time to upload pictures and add a post. One of the best blog incentives was the a-z blog challenge that I joined this past April. Bloggers were encouraged to post daily on a theme following the alphabet. This exercise helped me to think of topics […]

Lost in Translation – Chinese style

September 5, 2014 Claire Annette Noland 4 Comments

Getting around China was interesting since I don’t speak the language and certainly can’t read it. Things became even more interesting when we started reading signs that had been translated into English. The creativity of the translators is amazing or else the Chinese – English dictionary was written with a sense of humor.     […]

“What does it mean to be kind anyway?” Is the ques “What does it mean to be kind anyway?” Is the question at the heart of this beautiful picture book which speaks right to a child’s heart. We certainly need kindness and let’s each do our part, no matter how small, and see how that kindness spreads. Thank you @patzmill and @jenhill for writing and illustrating this important book.

King Tides mean not only very high tides but also King Tides mean not only very high tides but also extremely low tides. This afternoon low tide was -1.2 feet. Perfect for exploring tide pools. MY DEAR SEA by Andre Carrillo is another great book for beach goers. My favorite line is
“Try not to trip, protect foot and knee,
And never forget to respect my dear Sea.”

Be careful of the waves- they can sneak up on you.
Check out THE WAVE by Suzy Lee ( @chroniclekidsbooks 2008) a beautiful wordless picture book. So much emotion in the deceptively simple art.

New book alert! Mr. Ernie Recommends Hank’s Chang New book alert!
Mr. Ernie Recommends Hank’s Change of Heart by Cindy Williams Schrauben with illustrations by Sasha Richards (The Little Press)
Hank is a collector –of hearts. Day after day searches for things shaped like hearts and then organizes and counts them until it becomes an obsession. He doesn’t want to share until, one day, he sees a girl who needs a heart. “Maybe just one,” he thinks…
This is such a wonderful book about generosity. The joyful, bright illustrations combined with the jaunty read-aloud text will have readers spending time examining each spread and asking for repeated readings. Perfect for all those kids who love to seek, find, and collect.

Happened upon Ghosts at the library on Friday and Happened upon Ghosts at the library on Friday and this graphic novel turned out to be the perfect book for this weekend. A story of new beginnings, family, friendship, traditions, and courage. About spooky with lots of heart.
The authors notes give a great introduction to Dia de Los Muertos as well as information about cystic fibrosis which the younger sister struggles with. The art is rich and wonderful and the coastal California setting is perfect!

Our book/movie club continues. I have to admit, I Our book/movie club continues. I have to admit, I had never read any of the Wimpy Kid Diary books before. I enjoyed #1 in the series. The animated movie was filled with humor and heart with lots of laughs and “awe” moments. The kids give the books and movie 5 stars. I enjoyed them but one book was enough for me.
